What is a Moon Sign (Rashi)?
- The Moon at 6:00 PM
- The Moon earlier and later that day
Your Moon sign, or Janma Rashi, is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. Vedic astrology reads the Moon as the mind (manas): your feelings, memory and habits, and the things that make you feel safe. That's why an astrologer in India asks for your rashi before anything else, and why the daily rashifal is written for Moon signs rather than Sun signs.
Your Moon sign is also the second starting point of the whole chart. Transits, Sade Sati and marriage matching are counted from it, and the nakshatra your Moon sits in, which the Nakshatra Calculator reads in detail, decides which dasha you were born into. The Moon's own ten-year period, the Moon Mahadasha, brings all of this to the front.
Why Your Birth Time Matters
The Moon is the fastest body in the chart. It moves about 12 to 15 degrees a day and spends just over two and a quarter days in each sign, so two people born on the same day can have different Moon signs. On 23 September 2026, the Moon over New Delhi stays in Capricorn all day and crosses into Aquarius just before 10:00 PM: a child born at 6:00 PM has a Capricorn Moon, and one born at 10:00 PM an Aquarius Moon. If your result puts the Moon in the first or last degree or two of a sign, check your birth time before you rely on it.
Vedic vs Western Moon Sign
Western astrology measures the Moon against the tropical zodiac, which is fixed to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the stars. The slow wobble of the Earth's axis has pulled the two about 24 degrees apart, so in most charts the Vedic Moon sign is one sign earlier than the Western one. The calculator shows both, so you can see which one you've been reading. The same split applies to the Sun, as the Sun Sign Calculator shows.
Why the Moon Sign Matters in Vedic Astrology
- Your Mind and Moods
- Parashara calls the Moon the mind. Your Moon sign describes how you take in an ordinary day: what unsettles you, what calms you down and how fast your mood can turn.
- Mother and Home
- The Moon is the karaka of the mother and of the 4th house, which covers home, comfort and inner contentment. Its sign colours your bond with your mother and what makes a place feel like home to you.
- Chandra Lagna
- Astrologers read your chart a second time with the Moon's sign as the 1st house. The Ascendant shows what happens to you, the Chandra Lagna shows how you feel about it, and a yoga that appears from both is the one to trust.
- Transits and Sade Sati
- Gochara, the reading of transits, is counted from your Moon sign. So is Sade Sati: the roughly seven and a half years Saturn spends crossing the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon.
- Your Dasha Timeline
- The Vimshottari dasha starts from the nakshatra your Moon occupies at birth. How far the Moon had moved through that nakshatra sets how much of your first dasha was left.
- Marriage Matching
- Ashtakoota matching, the 36-point system used across India, compares the two partners' Moon signs and Moon nakshatras, since a marriage needs two minds that can live together.
The Moon in the Twelve Signs
Each sign changes how the Moon feels and reacts. These are the classical outlines, which hold most fully when the Moon is bright and the sign's lord is strong. For what each sign means on its own, see the twelve zodiac signs.
- Moon in Aries
- Your feelings are quick and direct. You react fast, act on it faster and get over it just as quickly, and you are happiest with room to move and something new to start.
- Moon in Taurus
- The Moon is exalted in Taurus, most of all near 3 degrees, and the rest of the sign is its moolatrikona. Feelings here are steady and loyal, comfort and routine settle you, and you change your mind slowly, sometimes too slowly.
- Moon in Gemini
- A busy, curious mind that settles by talking things through. You read people quickly and enjoy words, music and ideas, though too many open threads can leave you restless.
- Moon in Cancer
- Cancer is the Moon's own sign, where it is most at home. You are caring and protective of the people close to you, a kind word reaches you easily, and your moods and fortunes tend to move in cycles.
- Moon in Leo
- Proud, warm and generous, with settled views and real loyalty to family, your mother most of all. You need to feel respected, and your temper flares when you feel overlooked.
- Moon in Virgo
- Gentle and modest, with a sharp eye for detail and a liking for learning a skill properly. That same analytical mind can tip into worry and overthinking.
- Moon in Libra
- Fair-minded and principled, with a taste for the arts and a knack for business. You help the people around you readily, even when they don't return the favour.
- Moon in Scorpio
- Scorpio is the Moon's sign of debilitation, deepest near 3 degrees. Feelings run deep and private and you see through people, but your moods can take time to settle. A full or well-aspected Moon here is far stronger than the label suggests.
- Moon in Sagittarius
- Open, eloquent and generous, with an inventive mind that wants the bigger picture. Kindness moves you; pressure makes you dig in.
- Moon in Capricorn
- Strategic, active and devoted to family, with a mind that grasps things quickly and keeps working toward a goal. You can come across as reserved even when you care a great deal.
- Moon in Aquarius
- Intuitive, idealistic and a little detached, with a feel for art and a mystical streak. Life tends to bring sudden rises and dips, and you need time alone to make sense of them.
- Moon in Pisces
- Compassionate, well read and drawn to spiritual questions, more so as you get older. You often feel at home near water, and gains can arrive suddenly.
