What is a Sun Sign?
- The sign the Sun is in, in each zodiac
Your Sun Sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was transiting at the exact moment of your birth. In astrology, the Sun represents your soul (atma), your ego, your vitality and the core identity that gives shape to your entire life. It shows where you are meant to shine, lead and grow into your highest self.
Alongside the Ascendant and the Moon Sign, the Sun Sign forms one of the three pillars of personal astrology. The Sun rules your father, your dignity, your health (especially the heart and eyes), your career growth and your relationship with authority. A well placed Sun gives confidence, recognition and a strong sense of dharma. The Sun's six-year period, the Sun Mahadasha, brings these themes forward.
Sun Sign in Vedic vs Western Astrology
The biggest difference between Vedic and Western astrology shows up exactly here, at the Sun Sign. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons and the Sun's relationship with Earth's equator. The tropical zodiac starts at 0 degrees Aries on the spring equinox every single year.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored to the actual fixed stars in the sky. It measures planetary positions against the real constellations rather than the seasons.
Because of a slow celestial wobble called the precession of the equinoxes, the two zodiacs drift apart by about 1 degree every 72 years. Today they are roughly 24 degrees apart. That is why the same birth date will often give you one Sun Sign in Western astrology and the previous sign in Vedic astrology. For example, someone born on March 30 is an Aries in Western astrology but typically a Pisces in Vedic astrology. The dates the Sun enters each sidereal sign are listed in our Sankranti calendar.
Neither system is wrong. Western tropical astrology is highly effective for psychological and seasonal readings, while Vedic sidereal astrology aligns with the real stars and is preferred for predictive work, Dashas, transits and life event timing. Knowing both gives you a richer picture of who you are and how your life unfolds.

Sun in Each House of the Birth Chart
The house where the Sun sits shows the part of life where your identity, ego and life purpose are most strongly focused. Here is what the Sun means in each of the twelve houses. For the challenges each placement brings, read how the Sun behaves in each house.
- Sun in the 1st House
- The first house covers your body, personality, and self-image, and your Sun here can make you feel like the 'main character' in your life story. You probably take great pride in how you present yourself to the world, perhaps curating a very specific aesthetic or personal brand on social media. You are often determined to create a unique identity for yourself and would rather lead than follow. Your presence tends to draw people in, and you may enjoy being the first to try new trends or technologies. The risk is becoming too self-absorbed. In relationships, you can sometimes put your own needs ahead of your partner's without realizing it. Your confidence may rise and fall, but you usually bounce back from setbacks with renewed vitality. You may be drawn to careers where you are the face of the brand or in charge of the vision. Listen to others, though, because working with people can achieve as much as working alone. The Sun here can also give strong vitality and immunity. Elon Musk and Brad Pitt have this placement.
- Sun in the 2nd House
- Your Sun sits in the second house, which governs your family, personal assets, and values. You might place a high value on financial independence and security, and your self-esteem could be somewhat tied to what you own or the money you earn. Building a 'legacy' may appeal to you, whether through traditional family wealth, crypto investments, or a curated collection of things you love. Your way of speaking is probably distinct and authoritative enough to command attention. If you have siblings or close family members, you may feel a strong duty to support them or uphold family traditions, though you might also want to modernize them. You could be a 'foodie' with a specific taste who prefers quality over quantity. If your family has a strong reputation, you are likely determined to add your own chapter to that history. Try not to become rigid or stubborn about your possessions or beliefs. Your eyes or vision could be sensitive areas for you. Bill Clinton and Cristiano Ronaldo have this placement.
- Sun in the 3rd House
- In the third house of communication, courage, and hobbies, your Sun may express your ego and identity through your ideas and how you share them. You could be that person who always has a hot take on Twitter or dominates the group chat with new information. You probably thrive where you can network, learn, and showcase your intellect. Content creation, podcasting, or sales may interest you, since you likely have a persuasive way with words. If you have siblings, they may be a big part of your life, and the relationship can turn competitive at times. You might enjoy short trips, road trips, or being a 'digital nomad' more than staying in one spot. You could be naturally courageous and willing to take risks others shy away from. Be careful not to come across as intellectually arrogant, because learning to listen could help you a great deal. You might excel in fields requiring physical dexterity or quick thinking. Bob Marley and Deepika Padukone have this placement.
- Sun in the 4th House
- Your Sun falls in the fourth house, the part of the chart for your home, family, and emotional foundations. Your confidence may be deeply rooted in your private life and your living space. You could be very proud of your home and spend time on interior design to make it a perfect sanctuary or a 'safe space' for your friends. You may be an introvert or an ambivert who recharges away from the public eye. Real estate, working from home, or careers that balance ambition with domestic comfort might interest you. Your mother or a maternal figure could have played a major role in shaping who you are, as a strict but guiding influence. Early life may bring some struggles, but you could find your stride and success later, perhaps after your mid-30s. You might be sensitive and emotional, though you probably hide that side from the world to keep a strong exterior. Elizabeth Taylor and M.K. Stalin have this placement.
- Sun in the 5th House
- The fifth house is about creativity, romance, and self-expression. Your Sun here might make you a natural entertainer who loves the limelight. You very likely have artistic talent, whether in drama, design, gaming, or content creation. You generally want recognition for what you create and might treat your creative projects like your children. If you choose to have children, you might take immense pride in their achievements and be a very involved parent. In dating, you could be drawn to grand romantic gestures and might enjoy the 'chase' and excitement of new relationships. You might take speculative risks, such as trading or investing in volatile markets, on a gut feeling. Your playful energy probably attracts others to you. Don't let your ego get in the way of your relationships; it is okay to be vulnerable. You might also have a knack for leadership in youth groups or sports. Raj Kapoor and Will Smith have this placement.
- Sun in the 6th House
- Your Sun is in the sixth house, which deals with daily routines, wellness, and overcoming obstacles. You might define yourself through your work ethic and your ability to solve problems. You may be a perfectionist who keeps looking for ways to optimize your schedule, your diet, or your workflow. The 'wellness' lifestyle could draw you in, with a focus on biohacking, fitness, or mental health advocacy. You likely feel most confident when you are being useful or serving others. You might meet competitors or 'haters' in your career, but this placement gives you the resilience to outlast them. You could be successful in fields like law, medicine, coding, or any job that requires attention to detail. Watch out for burnout, though, because trying to be the hero at work can take a toll on your vitality. You might also have a strong bond with pets or animals. Relationships with coworkers could be tricky if ego clashes arise. Lady Diana and Rahul Gandhi have this placement.
- Sun in the 7th House
- Relationships, partnerships, and public image belong to the seventh house, and with your Sun there, you may learn the most about yourself through your interactions with others. You might look for a partner who is successful, confident, or well-known, since they reflect your own desire for status. You might see relationships as a partnership of equals and want a 'power couple' dynamic. You could give too much authority to your partner or, the other way round, let your ego create friction in your love life. Doing things alone might be hard, and you could prefer having a companion for social events or business ventures. Public-facing careers that depend on diplomacy and negotiation could draw you. You might feel undervalued when others don't give you the respect you think you deserve. Try not to let your self-worth depend entirely on your relationship status or public approval. Barack Obama and Charlie Chaplin have this placement.
- Sun in the 8th House
- The eighth house covers transformation, research, and shared resources, and your Sun here might give you a magnetic, somewhat mysterious aura that intrigues people. You may be drawn to the 'taboo' or hidden sides of life, such as psychology, true crime, astrology, or deep investigative work. You likely go through several major 'reinventions' of your identity and come back from difficult situations. Sudden ups and downs are possible, and they often push you to grow. You could be interested in managing other people's resources, or you might benefit from an inheritance or shared finances in a partnership. Your relationship with your father might be complex or distant. In relationships, you probably want deep intimacy and have little patience for superficial connections. You might have a talent for research and for seeing what others miss. Don't let power struggles or secrecy disturb your peace of mind. Amitabh Bachchan and Adolf Hitler have this placement.
- Sun in the 9th House
- The ninth house covers higher learning, spirituality, and global perspectives. With your Sun here, you might identify as a lifelong learner or a seeker of truth. Travel, different cultures, or the study of philosophy and ethics may draw you. You could like the idea of being a digital nomad, sharing your wisdom through blogs, or teaching in some capacity. You probably have a strong moral compass, and your principles can sometimes make you preachy. Your father or a mentor figure could be a big inspiration for your career path. Success might come far away from your birthplace, perhaps through people you connect with online from all over the world. You tend to look at the big picture and not get bogged down in details. Don't let your beliefs make you rigid; stay open to different viewpoints. You might also have natural luck or 'divine protection' that helps you through life. Mother Teresa and Dr. Manmohan Singh have this placement.
- Sun in the 10th House
- With your Sun in the tenth house, the house of career, reputation, and public standing, ambition often comes naturally, along with a wish to leave a significant mark on the world. You may gravitate towards leadership roles, whether as a CEO, a startup founder, or a social media influencer with a strong personal brand. Working under others probably feels uncomfortable, and you might prefer being your own boss or having a lot of autonomy. You can be very conscious of your status and of how the public sees you. Success may come, but it often brings a heavy workload and responsibility. If you put your career ahead of your personal life, work-life balance can be hard to find. Your father may be supportive and help shape your professional life. You have the drive to succeed; just keep your ego from creating conflict with authority figures or cutting you off from your peers. Albert Einstein and Arun Jaitley have this placement.
- Sun in the 11th House
- The eleventh house represents networks, gains, and social circles, and your Sun here can make you a natural networker who thrives in groups, communities, or online discord servers. You may be driven by big goals, including creating wealth for yourself and making an impact on society. You could be drawn to humanitarian causes, tech startups, or social activism. Because the Sun represents ego and the 11th house is about the collective, you might struggle to blend in and prefer to stand out within your group. Your relationship with authority figures or your father might be rocky, and you may find more comfort in your 'chosen family' of friends. You could expect recognition and rewards to come easily, and might feel frustrated if they don't. Watch for transactional relationships, and try to connect with people for who they are, not for what they can do for you. Elder siblings, if you have any, might play a big role in your life. Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp have this placement.
- Sun in the 12th House
- With your Sun in the twelfth house, the house of isolation, spirituality, and the subconscious, you might be an introverted soul who needs plenty of alone time to recharge. You may be highly creative or spiritual, with an interest in meditation, yoga, or dream work. Self-confidence might be a struggle early in life, and you may often feel that your true self is hidden from the world. You could find success in foreign lands or by working behind the scenes, such as in film editing, ghostwriting, or research. When overwhelmed, you might isolate yourself or get lost in escapism like gaming or binge-watching. Your relationship with your father might be distant or spiritually complex. The placement also gives you deep empathy and intuitive power. You might find your strength when you are alone or serving others without seeking credit. Be careful of hidden enemies or self-sabotaging behaviors. George Bush and Bill Clinton have this placement.
