Jupiter in Vedic astrology

Jupiter is the graha of judgment. It asks what a decision teaches, whether it is fair and what may grow out of it in ten years. It governs wisdom, ethics, faith, teachers, children, law and the kind of advice that turns out to have been worth taking. Jupiter can enlarge money and opportunity, but its more important job is deciding what the growth should be spent on. It also spends about four months of every year retrograde, and you can check when Jupiter turns retrograde this year.

In Hindu mythology Jupiter is Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods. That is why the word guru names both the planet and any teacher you owe something to. Thursday belongs to him. Guru Pushya is the day Jupiter's Thursday meets Pushya nakshatra. Queues form outside jewellery shops, because the combination is considered the best time in the year to buy gold. The association with prosperity is old and it is not subtle.

The house Jupiter occupies is where you look for meaning and where you expect life to open up. At its best it produces someone whose confidence comes from actually knowing things, and who can make a nervous person feel that a situation is manageable. Expansion is not automatically a gift though. Jupiter also magnifies spending, appetite, self importance and faith in a plan that has never been tested. Advice becomes preaching, and optimism quietly replaces preparation. A difficult Jupiter can show as poor counsel, disappointment in a teacher, or years of not knowing what to believe. The classical Jupiter remedies for that include the Guru mantra and charity on Thursdays.
