The 27 Nakshatras.

The Moon takes about twenty-seven days to circle the zodiac, and the tradition gives it one resting place for each night. Every nakshatra has its own stars, deity, symbol and temperament. Find yours with the nakshatra calculator.

Each sector holds the stars traditionally identified with that nakshatra. Eight of them are a single bright star.

What is a nakshatra?

Twenty-seven sectors, not twelve

A nakshatra is a lunar mansion, a fixed 13°20′ sector of the sidereal zodiac. Twenty-seven of them complete the circle. Each divides further into four padas of 3°20′, giving 108 padas in all. Each pada is also one navamsa of the D9 chart, and this guide shows how to read that chart. Nakshatras are a separate layer from the twelve zodiac signs and from the twelve houses, and they cut across both.

Which one is yours

Conventionally, the nakshatra your Moon occupies. That is your janma nakshatra, the birth star, and the tradition reads it as your emotional and instinctive pattern. Your ascendant sits in a nakshatra too, and that one describes how you arrive in a room. They are often different, and neither portrait will fit you completely.

What they are actually used for

Your Moon's nakshatra sets the starting point of the Vimshottari dasha, the planetary period system that times most of Jyotish. It starts the Yogini Dasha too, a shorter cycle that repeats every 36 years. Its pada supplies the traditional naming syllable. Practitioners also use nakshatras to choose auspicious timing and in compatibility matching. Reading any of these well takes the whole chart, not a birth star alone.

What makes each nakshatra different

Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, presiding deity, symbols, and traditional qualities. The nine planetary rulers repeat through the twenty-seven nakshatras in a fixed cycle, while the deities and the mythological stories add another layer of meaning.

The words used in every plate below

Gana
Temperament group used in matching: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa. Divine, human and fierce are symbolic categories, not a ranking of people.
Yoni
The animal category used as a separate matching factor. It often differs from the visual symbol, which is why Ashlesha has a serpent symbol but cat yoni.
Element
The five-element nakshatra grouping: Earth for stars one to five, Water for six to eleven, Fire for twelve to seventeen, Air for eighteen to twenty-two, Ether for the last five. It is not the same as the zodiac sign's element.
Shakti
The characteristic power or capacity the tradition assigns to a star. It describes a theme, not a supernatural ability the native possesses.
Electional nature
How suitable the star is for starting different kinds of work: swift, fixed, movable, soft, fierce, sharp or mixed. It is a timing category, never a verdict on character.

The power to reach swiftly

Ashwini opens the zodiac at the very first degree of Aries, and its imagery points to arrival. The Ashvin twins are physicians who ride out to whoever calls them, so this star is about getting there in time. Its shakti is swift attainment. Ashwini people often begin readily, recover from setbacks quickly, and stay loyal to anyone who once helped them. Its weak spots are impatience with maintenance and advice offered before the situation is understood. Varahamihira also linked an Ashwini Moon to intelligence and a liking for adornment, which complicates the modern habit of reading it as pure haste.

The power to carry away what is finished

Bharani is about bearing: carrying something through a demanding threshold until it is ready to emerge. The womb holds, and Yama presides over limits and consequence rather than simple fear of death. Its shakti is carrying away what has finished its term. Bharani often gives real endurance, strong appetite, and a willingness to make the uncomfortable decision nobody else will. It can tip into excess, possessiveness, and treating personal conviction as a licence for harshness. Varahamihira's description of a Bharani Moon names determination and truthfulness. A fierce electional rating describes what a moment suits, never the character of someone born under it.

Its shakti is burning and purification, which destroys but also nourishes, since fire is what makes raw food edible. People shaped by it notice at once what is sloppy, dishonest or badly made, and will say so. The shadow is criticism that humiliates, and calling bluntness honesty. Krittika is classified mixed rather than fierce, so it sustains as readily as it severs. The Krittika mothers who raised Skanda also give this star a protective, maternal side.

Those born under Rohini experience things vividly: taste, texture, beauty and reassurance matter more here than elsewhere, and they are good at helping a person or a project grow. The risk is attachment, envy, and refusing to release something that has clearly finished. The Moon reaches its exact exaltation at 3 degrees of Taurus, which falls inside Krittika rather than here. Ask what your growth is consuming.

Mrigashira is the deer's head, and its theme is searching: tracking, curiosity, and the sensitivity to catch a faint signal. Soma presides here, not Mars, which is why the star feels so little like its ruling planet. Its shakti is fulfilment, the finding of what was sought. Its people ask the next useful question and notice possibilities others walk past. Its trouble is chronic dissatisfaction: the next place or person always looks more promising. The symbol is a deer but the yoni is serpent, and the Taurus to Gemini boundary falls halfway through the star, not between its last two padas.

Ardra natives distrust the comforting story and want the real mechanism. They can stay with a hard problem long after the pleasant explanations have failed. The shadow is corrosive sarcasm and becoming attached to crisis itself. The teardrop is not a forecast of grief. Destruction that clears ground for repair is different from destruction that has quietly become an identity.

Ashlesha often gives an unusual memory for emotional detail and skill with concealed information. At its worst it turns into possessiveness and control exercised through silence. Its shakti is prosperity through union and patronage. This is the star of people who keep a commitment long after the novelty has gone. Taken too far, this turns into righteousness, controlling generosity, and a private ledger of favours. Bhaga and Aryaman often get swapped between the two Phalgunis. Patronage also cuts both ways. At its best it is mutual support both sides can trust; at its worst, leaning on someone powerful.
