Calculation methodology

One birth moment. Many layers of Jyotish.

Moon Dasha begins with astronomical positions, calculates the chart, then applies classical Vedic astrology rules in a defined order. This page shows where each result comes from and what it can reasonably tell you.

Every later feature uses the same normalized birth data and planetary positions.

  1. 01 Birth details

    Born

    Jaipur
    26.91° N, 75.79° E

Date, local time, and birthplace establish the exact moment and coordinates for the calculation.

  2. 02 Planetary degrees

    Sun
    Leo 12°04′
    Moon
    Scorpio 9°41′

An ephemeris service returns the astronomical longitude of each graha for that precise time.

The foundation must be precise

Interpretation can be debated. A planetary degree cannot be guessed. Moon Dasha separates the astronomical calculation from the astrological rules applied after it.

Birth time quality matters

If the recorded time is approximate, use fine vargas and exact event timing with caution. Even reliable software cannot correct an uncertain input by itself.

  1. 1

    Time and place normalization

A birthplace is converted into latitude and longitude. The local birth time is paired with the correct time zone and converted to a standard astronomical time reference. This matters because a small time difference can change the Ascendant, house cusps, and fine divisional charts.

  2. 2

    Ephemeris positions

Ephemeris software calculates the exact geocentric longitude of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu at the birth moment. These degrees also identify each planet's rashi, nakshatra, and nakshatra pada.

  3. 3

    Sidereal adjustment

Vedic astrology generally uses a sidereal zodiac. The selected ayanamsa accounts for precession and converts astronomical longitudes into sidereal zodiac positions. Moon Dasha supports multiple ayanamsas because different Jyotish traditions may use different reference values.

  4. 4

    Ascendant and house order

The Ascendant is the zodiac degree rising on the eastern horizon. Its rashi becomes the first house sign in a whole-sign chart. The next rashi becomes the second house, and the sequence continues through all twelve houses. Bhava Chalit uses house cusp calculations to study a planet's bhava placement separately from its rashi placement.

Lagna sets the house sequence

Suppose the calculated Ascendant falls in Cancer. Cancer becomes the first house sign, Leo becomes the second, Virgo the third, and the sequence continues around the zodiac. Planetary degrees then place each graha into a rashi, house, nakshatra, and pada.

What Moon Dasha builds on top

These systems share chart data, but each answers a different kind of question.

  • Charts and divisional charts

The D1 chart is the base chart. Divisional charts mathematically remap each planet's exact degree into finer sections of a rashi. D9, D10, D7, D60, and other vargas do not replace the D1. They refine specific topics and help test whether a promise repeats across chart layers.

  • Yogas and doshas

Rule-based checks examine signs, houses, lordships, conjunctions, aspects, dignity, and other conditions. A detected yoga is context, not an automatic event. Its results still depend on strength, dasha activation, and the rest of the horoscope.

  • Planetary and house strengths

Shadbala combines six forms of planetary strength. Vimsopaka Bala and Vaiseshikamsa compare dignity across vargas. Ashtakavarga records bindu support by sign. Bhava Bala measures the relative capacity of the houses. Each system answers a different question, so their scores should not be treated as interchangeable.

  • Transits and timing

Current ephemeris positions are compared with the natal chart. Slow planets, natal houses, Moon sign, Ashtakavarga support, and overlapping dasha periods can all change the reading. Saturn features also calculate Sade Sati, Dhaiya, and Saturn Return periods.

A dasha is calculated, not assigned from a quiz

Different dasha systems use different starting points and rulers. Agreement between systems can add context, but no one period should be read in isolation.

  • Vimshottari

Begins from the Moon's birth nakshatra. The balance at birth is based on how much of that nakshatra remains, then the planetary sequence unfolds across a 120-year cycle.

  • Yogini

Uses an eight-Yogini sequence across a 36-year cycle. It provides a second timing lens with shorter rhythms and its own sub-period structure.

  • Jaimini sign dashas

Chara and Narayana Dashas use rashis as period rulers. Direction, duration, and sequence depend on classical sign-based rules rather than the Vimshottari planetary order.

  • Kaal Chakra

Starts from the Moon's nakshatra pada and follows Savya or Apasavya movement. It is a detailed sign cycle used to examine changes in life direction and timing.

Calculation and interpretation are different jobs

Software can apply a formula consistently. Interpretation still requires context. A strong planet may rule a difficult house. A yoga may exist but remain inactive. A supportive transit may occur during a demanding dasha. Moon Dasha presents the computed layers so you can study the agreement and tension between them.

Use the result with judgment

Accurate arithmetic does not create certainty about a future event. Birth time quality, competing chart factors, the selected tradition, and human judgment all matter. Astrology should support reflection and planning. It should never replace medical, mental health, legal, financial, or emergency help.
