The 12 houses of Vedic astrology.

Twelve places for life to happen. Read what each bhava holds, what it asks of you and how it fits into the whole chart.

Start with the basics

What is a house in Vedic astrology?

A bhava is a field of life in a birth chart. The first house begins at the Lagna, or Ascendant, and the other eleven follow from it. A house tells you where a theme unfolds. A sign describes its setting, while the house lord is the planet ruling that sign. A natural karaka signifies a topic in every chart. These three roles should be read together, not substituted for one another.

Jyotish reads a house through its lord, planets placed there, aspects, strength, planetary periods and, when relevant, divisional charts. An empty house is not automatically weak. The sign and ruler of any house depend on your Ascendant; the natural zodiac correspondences in the profiles below are a learning aid. Find your rising sign with the Ascendant calculator, and measure how strong each of your houses is with the Bhava Bala calculator.

The pattern behind the twelve.

Houses belong to several groups at once. Kendras anchor the chart; trikonas describe dharma; dusthanas hold difficult subjects; upachayas grow through effort. The colors below are a teaching key, while each profile lists its other classifications.

  • Trikona 1 · 5 · 9
  • Kendra 1 · 4 · 7 · 10
  • Dusthana 6 · 8 · 12
  • Other 2 · 3 · 11

House 1 is both kendra and trikona, so it wears the trikona color. Dharma, artha, kama and moksha name the four aims of life. Each element follows the natural sign correspondence, not the sign in every birth chart.

The first house, called Tanu or Lagna Bhava, is the point from which your entire birth chart is read. It describes the body you live through, your vitality, appearance, temperament and the way you instinctively approach unfamiliar situations. It also shows how readily you can participate in everything promised elsewhere in the chart. Opportunity means little if a person lacks the health, confidence or direction to meet it.

People whose charts emphasize the first house often have a noticeable presence and a strong need to steer their own life. They may make decisions quickly, recover their footing after setbacks or feel uncomfortable when others define them. This does not always look outgoing: a quiet person can still have a firm identity and considerable personal force.

Difficult influences here can bring poor health, uncertainty about your identity, hesitation or the feeling that circumstances keep deciding life for you. The opposite can also occur: excessive focus on yourself, impatience and little room for another person's needs. Planets in the first house become visible through behavior and appearance, while the Ascendant lord shows where much of your attention and effort naturally goes.

The second house, known as Dhana Bhava, describes what sustains you and what remains available over time. It includes savings, possessions, food, family resources, early learning and speech. Income may arrive through the eleventh house, but the second shows whether anything is retained and whether your resources can support daily life and the people who depend on you.

This house often shows in a person's relationship with money and words. Some people save carefully, speak with weight and carry knowledge learned within the family. Others earn well but struggle to keep money, or discover that one harsh sentence can undo years of trust. Planets here can make wealth, food, family expectations or communication unusually important.

Difficult conditions may bring unstable savings, financial pressure, family conflict, possessiveness or speech that repeatedly causes damage. They can also produce silence when a person needs to speak. Traditional longevity work classifies the second as a maraka house, but that technical role cannot be used by itself to predict death. For practical reading, compare what you earn, what you spend and what you actually manage to preserve.

The third house, called Sahaja Bhava, is concerned with personal effort, courage, communication, younger siblings and skills developed through repetition. It shows whether you wait for confidence before acting or build confidence by doing the work. Talent may begin elsewhere in the chart, but this house describes the practice, persistence and willingness to risk an imperfect first attempt.

A noticeable third house often belongs to someone who learns with their hands, writes, performs, sells, travels locally or keeps trying after rejection. They may be self-directed and more comfortable testing an idea than asking permission. Relationships with younger siblings also fall here, although courage in one area does not guarantee harmony in the other.

Difficult influences can bring abandoned projects, constant comparison, quarrels, reckless choices or a need to prove bravery through unnecessary risks. In other charts, the problem is hesitation and a lack of trust in one's own skills. Planets in the third house show what motivates effort and how communication is used. This part of the chart usually improves through experience, but repetition only helps when the effort has a clear direction.

The fourth house, called Sukha or Bandhu Bhava, covers home, mother, property, education and the private feeling of being settled. It distinguishes material comfort from emotional safety. A person can live in a beautiful house and still struggle to relax there, while a modest home may offer the steadiness they need.

People with an active fourth house often care deeply about family decisions, living arrangements and creating a place that feels like their own. They may invest considerable energy in property, vehicles, education or caring for relatives. Vehicles and comforts also have their own divisional chart, the D16. Planets here can show what fills the home, what demands attention within it and what a person needs before they can rest.

Difficult influences may coincide with domestic conflict, repeated moves, interrupted education, property problems or hardship involving the mother. They can also leave someone successful in public but privately unable to switch off. One difficult placement does not prove an unhappy childhood or an uncaring parent. Read each subject separately, because home, mother, property and peace of mind can tell very different stories in the same chart.

The fifth house, known as Putra Bhava, describes intelligence, judgment, children, romance and what you create or teach. It is concerned with ideas and living things that continue beyond the first moment of inspiration. This includes artistic work, advice, learning, mantra practice and the responsibility of helping a child or student develop an independent mind.

An emphasized fifth house may belong to someone who enjoys teaching, performing, studying or taking an idea from imagination into form. They often want their choices to mean something and may become deeply invested in children, creative projects or romantic attention. Planets here show what stimulates the mind and where a person seeks the pleasure of creating, guiding or being appreciated.

Trouble here can involve poor judgment, gambling, dramatic romances, interrupted education or conflict involving children. Intelligence does not always prevent reckless decisions, and creative talent can become tied to approval. Severe combinations may relate to difficulty having children or loss, but no single placement can diagnose infertility or determine a child's future. Creativity, romance, intelligence and parenthood each need their own reading here. For children, astrologers also read a separate divisional chart, which the D7 chart calculator draws from your birth details.

The sixth house, called Ari or Ripu Bhava, covers illness, debt, enemies, disputes, employment and work that must be done whether you enjoy it or not. It deals with problems that need regular management. Repaying a loan, following treatment, answering a legal complaint, supervising employees and caring for someone who is unwell can all activate this house.

Sixth house emphasis can make a person highly capable under pressure. They may notice what is wrong, tolerate demanding routines and keep working when others avoid the problem. This can suit medicine, administration, maintenance, litigation, competition or service. It can also create a habit of living as though every day contains another battle.

The difficult outcomes include recurring health concerns, unpaid debt, hostile coworkers, exhausting obligations and opponents who consume time and resources. Resentment and constant fault finding can grow when conflict becomes familiar. An active sixth house does not guarantee victory, and difficulty here does not mean defeat. One placement cannot diagnose an illness or decide a court case. The chart must show both the problem and the person's capacity to handle it.

The seventh house, called Yuvati or Kalatra Bhava, describes marriage, committed partnership, sexual union, business agreements and direct dealings with other people. It begins where the self meets someone with separate desires and the power to accept, refuse or negotiate. This is why love, contracts, clients and open opponents can share the same house: each requires you to respond to another person's terms.

People with several important factors in the seventh house often learn about themselves through partnership. They may be skilled at negotiation, strongly motivated to marry or drawn toward work involving clients and the public. Planets here shape the kind of exchange that becomes important. They can bring affection and cooperation, but also duty, competition, delay or an unusual relationship structure.

Serious difficulty in this house may coincide with incompatibility, sexual dissatisfaction, litigation, separation or loss of a spouse in severe combinations. It can also produce dependence on approval or a pattern of treating every relationship like a transaction. None of these outcomes can be declared from one planet. Check the first house too, because partnership problems cannot always be assigned to the other person. Attraction, commitment, business success and marital happiness must be judged separately. The 7th house calculator finds your 7th sign, its lord and the planets placed there.

The eighth house, known as Randhra or Ayur Bhava, deals with longevity, death, vulnerability, hidden matters and resources tied to other people's circumstances. Inheritance, insurance, taxes, joint financial exposure and confidential investigation belong here. Its events often reduce personal control. They may uncover a secret, create dependence, expose a liability or force someone to manage a change they did not choose. Because these matters involve limited information and shared risk, trust, consent and accurate records can become unusually important.

Eighth house emphasis can give patience with complexity and the ability to remain useful during a crisis. Some people become skilled at research, confidential work, shared finances or subjects that others find uncomfortable. That capacity does not mean life will spare them disruption. Endurance, understanding a crisis, benefiting from it and avoiding it are four different outcomes.

Harder combinations can bring instability, fear, mistrust, inheritance disputes, financial entanglement or prolonged hardship. They may also create a need to control anything uncertain. The house has spiritual and psychological depth, but calling every painful event "transformation" can minimize what happened. Traditional astrology examines longevity here, yet neither this house nor one planet can determine lifespan or predict death safely. That judgment requires many factors and should never be made casually.

The ninth house, called Dharma or Bhagya Bhava, concerns teachers, father, higher education, religion, long journeys and the principles that guide important choices. It is often described as the house of fortune, and that fortune includes access to guidance, inherited opportunity and a framework that helps you recognize what is worth doing when several paths are available.

With several important influences here, a person may seek mentors, study deeply, travel for learning or organize life around a moral or religious conviction. They may receive help at a critical moment, but they still need the judgment to use it well. Planets here can show what kind of teacher, belief or experience changes a person's direction.

Problems in this house may bring interrupted studies, conflict with father, disappointment in a guru, blocked journeys or uncertainty about what to believe. The opposite problem is rigid certainty: preaching, spiritual pride or trusting an impressive authority without thinking. A troubled ninth house does not make someone immoral or abandoned by God. It can describe a difficult relationship with inherited beliefs while the person develops an ethical life through experience.

The tenth house, called Karma or Rajya Bhava, describes profession, public responsibility, authority, reputation and the work by which you become known. It is wider than a job title. This house includes the duties you accept, the decisions others can see and the consequences of how you use responsibility.

The tenth house shows most clearly in people who need their work to matter in public. They may organize others, carry major responsibilities or build expertise that becomes publicly recognized. Planets here can shape the pace of a career, the kind of authority encountered and whether public life feels energizing, burdensome or unstable.

When this house is troubled, it may bring interrupted employment, conflict with bosses, blocked recognition, disgrace or the inability to turn skill into a clear vocation. It can also produce ruthless ambition and a life with no identity outside work. Career success does not prove good character, just as limited recognition does not make someone's contribution worthless. Read the tenth with the houses of daily work, gains and retained wealth. A job, its income, its reputation and its effect on private life are separate questions. Career is also read in the D10, the divisional chart for profession, and this guide shows how to read it.

The eleventh house, known as Labha Bhava, covers gains, income, elder siblings, friends, supporters and desires that reach a result. It shows what comes back from your efforts. That return may arrive through a profession, business, property, a useful skill or people willing to open a door. It is therefore broader than salary and more practical than simply having a large social circle.

People with several active eleventh house factors often understand networks and know how to connect effort with opportunity. They may gain through groups, cultivate influential friendships or pursue goals with patience. Planets here can describe the source, quality and cost of those gains. A person may receive considerable support from others, yet still feel uncertain about which relationships are genuine.

Trouble in this area can bring disappointing income, unreliable allies, conflict with elder siblings or years of work that produce too little in return. It may also create endless wanting. Each achieved target is quickly replaced by another, so success never feels sufficient. Income is not the same as savings, so compare this house with the second to see whether gains remain available after they arrive.

The twelfth house, called Vyaya Bhava, describes expenditure, loss, sleep, private pleasure, separation and withdrawal from ordinary life. Its common thread is that something leaves your possession, attention or public view. Money may leave through charity, waste or unavoidable costs. Time away from society may mean rest, spiritual retreat, foreign residence, hospitalization or confinement. These experiences cannot be treated as if they carry the same meaning.

When several factors draw attention to the twelfth house, a person may works behind the scenes, needs substantial solitude or feels drawn to distant places and contemplative practice. Planets here can show what consumes resources and what becomes active in private. Some placements support generosity and restorative sleep; others make it hard to know when retreat has turned into avoidance.

Harder patterns can bring financial leakage, disturbed sleep, isolation, secret problems, escapism or costly obligations. Foreign residence is not automatically fortunate, and being alone is not automatically peaceful. The twelfth is also connected with liberation, but one placement cannot prove enlightenment or spiritual superiority. Ask what is leaving, why it is leaving and whether the loss creates needed space or simply weakens the life around it.
