What is the D60 (Shashtiamsha) Chart?
- The Moon's shashtiamsha, Leo in the D60
The D60, or Shashtiamsha chart, is the 60th divisional chart in Vedic astrology. Every 30 degree zodiac sign is divided into 60 small parts of half a degree each, and each planet's exact position within its sign is used to place it into a brand new sign inside the D60.
Unlike most divisional charts that focus on a single area of life such as marriage, career or children, the D60 influences every part of the horoscope. It is treated as the karmic foundation behind the birth chart. The D1 shows what is likely to happen, the D9 shows the strength and support behind those outcomes, and the D60 shows the accumulated karma driving them.
How it is calculated: in simple terms, each planet's degree inside its sign is scaled up until every half degree becomes its own micro sign. The sign that corresponds to that micro segment becomes the planet's D60 sign. Because each Shashtiamsha is only half a degree wide, the chart is highly sensitive to birth time and considered one of the most demanding divisional charts to use accurately.
Sage Parashara assigned the D60 one of the highest weightages among all divisional charts, precisely because it reveals hidden karmic support or resistance that a birth chart alone cannot explain. For the 60 deities and their benefic and malefic effects, read our guide on how to read the D60 chart.
How to Use the D60 Chart
The D60 is a supporting chart. It should always be read together with the D1 and preferably the D9, which this guide explains step by step. Here is how different placements in the D60 are typically interpreted.
- D60 Ascendant
- Treat the D60 ascendant as your karmic personality framework. A strong D60 ascendant and lagna lord indicate better karmic support, greater stability and easier manifestation. A weak D60 ascendant suggests more challenges, more fluctuation and important karmic lessons around identity and life direction.
- D1 Lagna Lord in D60
- The Lagna lord represents your core identity and life path. A strong Lagna lord in the D60 gives protection, resilience and easier recovery from setbacks. A weak Lagna lord in the D60 points to recurring obstacles, delayed success and greater effort required to reach your goals.
- Planetary Dignity in D60
- Check whether each planet is exalted, in its own sign, debilitated or neutral in the D60. Planets strong in both D1 and D60 become extremely reliable in delivering their significations. Planets weak in both often produce persistent life themes and require conscious effort and remedies.
- Dasha Lords in D60
- When you enter a new Mahadasha or Antardasha, look up the same planet in the D60. A strong D60 placement supports better outcomes, hidden opportunities and karmic protection during the dasha, while a weak D60 placement warns of delays, tests and mixed results. The Dasha Sandhi calculator shows when your next period begins.
- Repeating Themes
- Look for the same sign, same house, same conjunction or same yoga appearing in D1, D9 and D60. Repeating patterns show intensified karmic emphasis. For example, Venus in the 7th house across all three charts makes relationships a central life theme.
- D1 House Lords in D60
- For any important life area, locate the D1 house lord in the D60. A strong D60 placement supports that life area. A weak D60 placement indicates deeper karmic resistance affecting the topic ruled by that house, from children and creativity to career and fortune.
Basic Rules You Can Check Yourself
You do not need to be an advanced astrologer to get real value out of the D60. These simple checks give you most of the practical insight without going into esoteric theories.
Strong in Both D1 and D60
List the planets that are exalted, in their own sign or well placed in both the D1 and D60. These become your most reliable planets and often show where life supports you naturally, with less struggle.
Weak in Both D1 and D60
Note the planets that are debilitated or badly placed in both charts. These usually mark the persistent challenges of the life, the karmic tests that repeat until you consciously work with them.
Check the D60 Ascendant Lord
Find the D60 lagna lord and see whether it is strong or weak by sign and house. This one factor gives a quick reading of your karmic support, resilience and overall stability in this life.
Compare Dasha Lords Across D1 and D60
Look at your current Mahadasha and Antardasha lord. If it is strong in D1 but weak in D60, expect surface success with hidden struggle. If it is strong in both, expect smoother and more satisfying outcomes.
Spot Repeating Placements
Scan the D1, D9 and D60 for planets that keep landing in the same sign, house or with the same partner planet. Repeating themes highlight the most karmically loaded areas of your life.
Assess Benefic vs Malefic Influence
Look at your Ascendant, Moon and 10th house in the D60. Benefic influences from Jupiter, Venus or a strong Moon suggest karmic blessings. Heavy malefic influence suggests karmic effort and lessons before rewards.
