The useful definition

What is Rahu Kaal?

Rahu Kaal, also written as Rahu Kalam, Rahu Kaalam, Rahukaal or Rahu Kala, is a daily period used in Hindu Muhurta practice. People traditionally avoid choosing it as the starting time for an important or auspicious activity.

The word that matters is starting. Rahu Kaal is not a command to put ordinary life on pause. Work that began earlier can continue, as can routine study, meals, exercise, household tasks and a journey already underway.

A simple rule: avoid a flexible major beginning when practical. Otherwise, continue normal responsibilities without fear.

Practical guidance

What to avoid and what can continue

Traditionally avoid starting

  • Wedding, engagement or Griha Pravesh rites
  • A new business, shop or major project
  • An important contract or fresh investment
  • Purchase of a home, vehicle, gold or jewellery
  • A flexible major journey or inauguration
  • The formal first step of an auspicious ceremony

Generally fine to continue

  • Work, meetings or a project already in progress
  • Regular study and attendance at school or college
  • Eating, cooking, bathing, sleeping or exercise
  • A journey that started before Rahu Kaal
  • Daily prayer and established spiritual practice
  • Medicine, appointments and urgent responsibilities

Do not delay medical care, miss essential travel or create a safety risk to avoid Rahu Kaal. Necessity takes priority over an elective timing preference.

The calculation

Why the time changes by city and season

Rahu Kaal is tied to local daylight, so it cannot have one correct clock time for every place. The calculator reads sunrise and sunset for the date and city you selected, then works with the daylight between them.

Summer days usually make each portion longer, while winter days make it shorter. Sunrise also shifts from one city to another. That is why a timing copied from a calendar or another location may not match your result.

The weekday decides which portion belongs to Rahu. The clock time comes from your actual sunrise and sunset, not from a fixed timetable.

How your result is found

A local daylight calculation

  1. 01

    Read local sunrise and sunset

Choose a date and location so the calculator can find the correct local sunrise and sunset.

  2. 02

    Measure that day's daylight

The time between sunrise and sunset gives the daylight available for that date.

  3. 03

    Split daylight into equal portions

The calculator divides the daylight into eight portions of equal length.

  4. 04

Use the portion assigned to the weekday

The weekday determines which portion becomes Rahu Kaal, and the calculator shows its local start and end time.

Meaning and significance

Why Rahu is linked with this period

In the Samudra Manthan story, Svarbhanu disguises himself among the devas and drinks amrita. Surya and Chandra reveal him, and Vishnu severs his head. The immortal head becomes Rahu. This story connects Rahu with concealment, disruption and eclipses in Hindu tradition.

Astronomically, Rahu is not a physical planet. It corresponds to the ascending lunar node, one of the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. Eclipses can occur when the Sun, Moon and a lunar node line up closely enough.

The lunar nodes are part of astronomy. The belief that a weekday portion affects the outcome of a new activity belongs to astrology and religious tradition, not established astronomical science.

Worship and remedies

Can you pray during Rahu Kaal?

01

Daily prayer can continue

An established daily practice does not need to stop. Some Muhurta traditions simply avoid using this period to begin a new ceremony for an auspicious result.

02

Rahu worship may use this time

Japa, meditation and Rahu focused propitiation are often performed during Rahu Kaal. "Om Ram Rahave Namah" is a commonly used simple mantra.

03

Practice varies by tradition

Some South Indian traditions use Tuesday or Friday Rahu Kalam for Durga or Shakti worship. Family, temple and teacher guidance can differ.
