What is Bhava Bala?

  • The lord's Shadbala
  • Direction, then aspects

Bhava Bala means "house strength". It measures how much support each of the twelve houses in a birth chart has to deliver what it governs, from the body in the 1st house to expenses and retreat in the 12th. You will also see it written as Bhav Bala.

Each house is scored from three parts: the Shadbala of the planet that rules it, the direction its sign faces, and the aspects the planets cast on its middle. The three are added in Virupas, so two houses can reach a similar total for very different reasons.

In the chart shown, the 12th house comes out strongest. Saturn rules it with good strength, its sign sits one house from its best direction, and benefic aspects lift it further. The 12th is a dusthana, so that strength points to more of its own matters, such as spending and time away, rather than to an easy house. The 8th house is weakest: its lord Venus is moderate, its direction adds little, and the aspects on it nearly cancel out. For a dusthana, that low total is the gentler result.

Bhava Bala shows where the strength in a chart sits. For most houses more strength means fuller results, but the 6th, 8th and 12th work the other way: their strength feeds their difficulties. Whether events feel pleasant still depends on the lord's nature, the planets in the house and the dasha running at the time.

The Three Parts of Bhava Bala

Every row of your breakdown table belongs to one of these three. The total tells you how much support a house has, and the parts tell you where it comes from.

Bhavadhipati Bala
Strength of the house lordThe full Shadbala of the planet that rules the sign on the house. A house can only deliver as much as the planet in charge of it, which is why this part makes up most of every total.
What raises it: A strong lord: one that clears its own Shadbala minimum through dignity, direction, timing and good aspects. Two houses ruled by the same planet share this figure exactly.
Bhava Dig Bala
Directional strengthEach kind of sign has a house where it is most at home. A house earns 60 Virupas when its sign sits there and loses 10 for every house it stands away, down to nothing on the opposite side.
What raises it: Human signs (Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius, the first half of Sagittarius) in the 1st. Water signs (Cancer, Pisces, the second half of Capricorn) in the 4th. Scorpio in the 7th. Four-footed signs (Aries, Taurus, Leo, the rest of Sagittarius and Capricorn) in the 10th.
Bhava Drig Bala
Strength from aspectsThe aspects the seven planets cast on the middle of the house. Benefic aspects add and malefic aspects subtract, so this is the one part that can pull a total down, and it can fall below zero.
What raises it: Aspects from Jupiter and Mercury, which count in full, and from Venus and a bright Moon, which count at a quarter. Aspects from Saturn, Mars, the Sun and a dark Moon take strength away.

Virupas, Rupas and the Strong and Weak Lines

Bhava Bala is reported in Virupas, the small unit of strength in Jyotish. Sixty Virupas make one Rupa, so a house with 480 Virupas has 8 Rupas.

ReadingVirupasRupasWhat it suggests
Strong480 and over8 and overAmple support behind the house's matters. In a dusthana, more of its difficulties.
Medium420 to 4807 to 8Enough support to deliver with ordinary effort.
WeakUnder 420Under 7Its matters ask for more effort. In a dusthana, fewer of its difficulties.

Where the lines come from

Moon Dasha reads 480 Virupas and over as strong and under 420 as weak, the same lines the birth chart report uses. The classical texts set pass marks for planets, not for houses. They rank the twelve houses of a chart from strongest to weakest and read them in that order.

Read the ranking first

Your ranking is the most useful part of the result. A chart where every house falls under 480 still has a strongest house, and its matters still have the most support in that chart.

What Strength Means for Each House

Read your total for each house beside the areas of life it governs. For nine houses a higher total means fuller results. The 6th, 8th and 12th, the dusthanas, work the other way: there a higher total brings more of the house's difficulties and a lower one keeps them small.

How to Read Your Bhava Bala Result

Work through the result in this order. Each step keeps the number tied to the chart it came from.

  1. Find the two ends of the ranking

Start with your strongest and weakest houses. They show which areas of life have the most support behind them in your chart and which ask for more effort.

  2. See where each total comes from

Open the table. A total carried by a strong lord behaves differently from one lifted by good aspects, and houses that share a lord always share that part.

  3. Read the house with its lord and the dasha

A house shows its results most clearly while its lord's dasha or antardasha runs. Read each total beside the lord's placement and the periods you are in.

Strength is not a verdict

Bhava Bala measures how much support a house has. It does not predict one fixed event, and a weak house is not a missing one. Nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice, and no house score should delay care or a decision that needs a professional.

Mistakes to Avoid

These are the errors that turn a correct calculation into a wrong reading.

Reading a weak house as an empty one
A low total means the house delivers with more effort, not that its matters are missing from your life. Plenty of people with a weak 7th house marry happily.
Forgetting that houses share lords
Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, so the two houses holding those signs carry the same lord's strength. Their totals differ only through direction and aspects.
Comparing totals across charts
Bhava Bala is most useful inside one chart, where it ranks the twelve houses against each other. A 470 in your chart and a 470 in a friend's do not describe the same life.
Using a rounded birth time
The Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, and every house moves with it. When a house midpoint crosses into a new sign, its lord and its direction score both change.
Celebrating a strong 6th, 8th or 12th
In the three dusthanas the reading turns around. A high total gives more of the house's own troubles, such as disputes, upheaval or expenses, and a low total keeps them small.
Skipping the planets in the house
This calculation adds nothing for the planets sitting in a house. Read the occupants and their own Shadbala alongside the house total.

Bhava Bala, Shadbala and Ashtakavarga

Jyotish measures strength in several ways, and each answers a different question. Bhava Bala is the one that rates the houses.

Bhava Bala
The strength of each of the twelve houses, from its lord, its direction and the aspects it receives.
Best used for: Ranking the areas of life in one chart and seeing which have the most support.
Shadbala
The six-fold strength of the seven classical planets, set against each planet's own minimum.
Best used for: Judging whether a planet can deliver at all. It feeds straight into the houses that planet rules.
Sarvashtakavarga
The benefic points each sign collects from the seven planets and the Ascendant, up to 56 per sign.
Best used for: Checking how much support a house gets from every planet at once, and timing transits through each sign.

Bhava Bala is built on planetary strength, so see how strong each house lord is on its own with the Shadbala Calculator, or find the rising sign every house is counted from with the Ascendant Calculator.
