Most websites describe Moon Mahadasha as ten calm years of home, comfort and family. For a lot of people, it starts with broken sleep, skipped meals and a mind that won't settle. Both pictures appear in the classical texts, and which one you get depends on four things in your chart.
The Moon (Chandra) stands for the manas (the mind that feels and reacts), your mother, food, water, sleep, home and the public. So most articles call its Mahadasha an emotional decade and stop there.
That's half the story. Depending on your chart, these 10 years can be about buying a home, building a public-facing career, studying abroad, becoming a parent or rebuilding your savings. The emotional side is real, but the natal Moon decides where in your life it plays out.
In this article, I'll cover how these years feel, what the classics say, how to judge your own Moon, all nine sub-periods and the remedies I'd start with.
So without any further ado, let's get into it.
Moon Mahadasha is the Moon's 10-year major period in the Vimshottari dasha system, which divides a 120-year cycle among the nine planets. It follows the Sun's 6-year Mahadasha and comes before Mars's 7. The shorter Yogini dasha gives the Moon a single year, as Mangala.
Your first dasha at birth comes from the nakshatra (lunar mansion) your Moon occupied. The Moon rules three of them: Rohini, Hasta and Shravana.
If your Moon sat in one of these, you were born inside a Moon Mahadasha with part of it already used up. That only sets your timing. It doesn't promise high office, whatever you've read.
Rohini spans 10° to 23°20' of Taurus. If your Moon sat at 16°40' Taurus, exactly half the nakshatra was left, so about 5 of the Moon's 10 years remained at birth.
That's why one person enters this period at 4 and another at 34, and why some people only live through part of it.
Each Mahadasha is split into nine Antardashas (sub-periods, also called Bhuktis), one for each planet. They set the tone of each stretch, and I cover all nine further down.
The Dasha Sandhi calculator shows your current Mahadasha and Antardasha with exact dates, and when the next one begins.
Most people notice the Moon's themes before they notice any big event. Sleep changes, eating habits change, and home, family and the people you look after take up more room than they did in the Sun's years.
One astrologer described the shift in a way I agree with. In this dasha, people stop asking "Is this right?" and start asking "Does this give me peace?"
Decisions come from how something feels more than from calculation, so comfort often wins over ambition.
What that looks like depends on the chart. One person became a mother during their Moon Mahadasha and called it a rollercoaster. They listed four house moves, days built around the child and the home, hormonal changes, and long stretches of loneliness and anxiety.
That's the Moon's mother, home and care significations at their heaviest. With a well-supported Moon, the same themes tend to show up as a calmer home and closer family ties.

Here's how the themes tend to split, as a modern summary rather than a classical quote.
| Area | When the Moon is supported | When the Moon is under strain |
|---|---|---|
| Mind | Calmer, more self-aware, adapts to change | Reactive, unsure, struggles with change |
| Home and family | Belonging, a better home, closer to parents | Competing demands, heavy care duties |
| Work and public | Support from clients, teams and audiences | Takes feedback personally, shifting priorities |
| Money | Spent on home, land, vehicles and comfort | Emotional spending, comfort-buying |
| Inner life | Rest, devotion, creativity, empathy | Worry, putting decisions off |
A strong Moon in the 10th house can make this a very public decade. A Moon in the 12th tends to keep it private, with more expenses, distance or spiritual practice.
The best-known description comes from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), in chapter 47 of its most common English translation (verses 16 to 26). Parashara gives two sets of conditions.
When the Moon Is Strong
BPHS gives the best results when the Moon:
- is exalted (in Taurus) or in its own sign (Cancer)
- sits in a Kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house), or in the 5th, 9th or 11th
- has benefics with it or aspecting it
- joins the lord of the 4th, 9th or 10th
The results it lists are concrete: wealth, a high government post, happy events at home, children, vehicles, clothes and cattle. If such a Moon sits in the 2nd house, the text adds unusual gains of wealth.
When the Moon Is Weak
A waning or debilitated Moon brings loss of wealth in its dasha. With malefics, BPHS adds mental tension and trouble involving employees and the mother.
For a waning Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th (the Dusthanas, houses of conflict, sudden change and loss), the text lists friction with authority, money loss and distress to the mother.
Two lines in the same passage get skipped by most websites. A Moon in the 3rd gives happiness off and on. And a strong Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th gives troubles and good times by turns.
What Phaladeepika Adds
Mantreswara's Phaladeepika (opens in a new tab) (chapter 19, verse 7) lists peace of mind, success in what you start, good food, family happiness, clothes, ornaments and land as Moon dasha results. Its translator, S.P. Bhagat, notes that these early verses describe dashas in general and shouldn't be read as Vimshottari rules, so read them as a picture of a strong Moon.
Verse 8 says these come in full only when the Moon is strong. It measures that strength by the Moon's phase at birth:
- From the 1st to the 10th tithi (lunar day) of the waxing fortnight, the Moon has medium strength.
- From the 11th tithi of the waxing fortnight to the 5th of the waning one, around the full Moon, it has full strength.
- From the 6th tithi of the waning fortnight to the new Moon, it grows weaker, and the good results shrink.

Some articles turn these three ten-day parts into three stages of your Mahadasha, but the verse is about how bright the Moon was at your birth.
I check six things in this order, and I don't add them up like a score. When they disagree, expect a mixed reading, with some areas of life favoured and others strained.
You'll need your ascendant, the Moon's sign and house, and your dasha dates. Enter your birth details below. Your results show all three, and the Dashas tab lists every period with its dates.
1. Which House Does the Moon Rule?
The Moon rules only Cancer. Count from your ascendant to Cancer, and that house's topics run through all 10 years.
If you're not sure of your ascendant, the ascendant calculator finds it from your birth time.
| Ascendant | Moon rules | What the 10 years tend to activate |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 4th | Home, property, vehicles, mother, education |
| Taurus | 3rd | Effort, skills, writing, siblings, short trips |
| Gemini | 2nd | Savings, family, speech, food |
| Cancer | 1st | Health, identity, personal direction |
| Leo | 12th | Expenses, life abroad, sleep, retreat, spiritual practice |
| Virgo | 11th | Income, networks, gains, ambitions |
| Libra | 10th | Career, status, public work |
| Scorpio | 9th | Luck, higher learning, mentors, long journeys |
| Sagittarius | 8th | Shared money, research, sudden change, hidden matters |
| Capricorn | 7th | Marriage, partnerships, clients, contracts |
| Aquarius | 6th | Workload, service, competition, debt, health routines |
| Pisces | 5th | Children, studies, creativity, devotion |
The 5th and 9th (Pisces and Scorpio ascendants) are usually the easiest lordships to carry. For a Cancer ascendant, the Moon is your chart's own ruler, so the decade is about you.
For a Leo ascendant, the Moon owns the 12th, so expenses and distance come with it. With the right support, that can mean good work abroad rather than loss.
Sagittarius ascendants get a classical exception. BPHS (chapter 34, verses 2 to 7, on how house lordship colours a planet) says the usual fault of owning the 8th doesn't apply to the Sun and the Moon. That doesn't make the period automatically good, but don't read the 8th lordship alone as a warning.
2. Which House Does the Moon Sit In?
Lordship tells you which topics come up, and placement tells you where they play out. Following BPHS:
- 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th or 11th: the supportive houses. The 4th adds Digbala (directional strength), since the Moon is strongest by direction there.
- 2nd: strong financial results when the Moon is strong too.
- 3rd: happiness in spurts.
- 6th, 8th or 12th: harder, but a strong Moon here still gives mixed results.
Someone with a Cancer ascendant has the Moon, their ascendant lord, in Leo in the 2nd house. Their move from the Sun's Mahadasha came with a rough dasha sandhi (the junction where one Mahadasha hands over to the next).
A few months in, they noticed a pattern: every family holiday was followed by good career news, mostly about studying abroad. Family is a 2nd-house topic, and travel is one of the Moon's own.
For what the Moon does in each house outside its dasha, see Moon in the 12 houses.
3. How Strong Is the Moon by Sign?
The Moon is exalted in Taurus, most of all at 3°, and the rest of Taurus is its Moolatrikona (a zone of high dignity just below exaltation). Cancer is its own sign, and Scorpio is its debilitation sign, most of all at 3°.
In the standard classical table, the Moon counts the Sun and Mercury as friends and has no natural enemies. So a Moon in Capricorn isn't in an "enemy sign" just because Saturn rules it.
Also check the dispositor (the lord of the sign the Moon sits in). A Moon in Libra depends a lot on Venus.
And don't treat exaltation as a free pass. A strong Moon gives the topics of its house strongly, and that includes a difficult house.
Does a debilitated Moon guarantee a bad decade? No. One person with a debilitated Moon in the 8th expected mood swings and upheaval from the start.
Three months in, the mood swings had arrived, but no big transformation had, and two overseas trips were already booked.
Debilitation tells you the Moon needs support. Mars (Scorpio's lord), benefic aspects and the Moon's degree decide how much it gets.
4. How Bright Was the Moon at Your Birth?
The Moon's light depends on its distance from the Sun. From 0° to 180° ahead of the Sun, it's waxing (Shukla Paksha), and from 180° to 360°, it's waning (Krishna Paksha).
In Shadbala, the six-fold strength system, this light is measured as Paksha Bala.
Brightness changes gradually, so treat it as a scale. A Moon two days after full is nearly as bright as one two days before it, even though it's technically waning.
The Moon with the least light is the one born close to the Sun, near Amavasya (the new Moon).
To check yours, set your birth date, time and place in the Moon Phases tool, which shows the tithi and paksha for any moment. The Shadbala calculator then shows how the Moon scores across all six strength measures.
5. Who Sits With or Aspects the Moon?
Planets joining or aspecting the Moon colour the whole period:
- Jupiter: learning, good advice and material support. Jupiter in a Kendra from the Moon forms Gajakesari yoga, which needs both planets strong to deliver much.
- Venus: comfort, home and relationships.
- Mercury: study, trade and writing.
- Mars: drive and property, with a quicker temper when afflicted.
- Saturn: responsibility and steady work, with a heavier mood.
- Rahu or Ketu: unusual openings or detachment, depending on their sign lords.
Each planet also brings the houses it rules for your ascendant. Saturn ruling your 9th and 10th joins the Moon very differently from Saturn ruling your 6th.
And if your Moon has Kemadruma yoga (in its basic form, no planets other than the Sun in the houses on either side of it), check its cancellation rules before you worry.
6. Read Each Sub-Period Lord From Two Points
For each Antardasha, look at the sub-period lord's sign, the houses it rules, its house from your ascendant, and its house counted from the natal Moon. BPHS keeps returning to one pattern. A lord in a Kendra, a Trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th), or the 2nd, 3rd or 11th tends to give good results. One in the 6th, 8th or 12th tends to bring trouble, though the planet's own strength still matters.
BPHS gives a general timing rule in the opening verses of the same chapter. If the dasha lord sits in the first Drekkana (0° to 10°) of its sign, its results show most at the start of the period.
In the second Drekkana (10° to 20°), they peak in the middle. In the third (20° to 30°), they peak toward the end.
So check your Moon's degree. A Moon at 24° Cancer tends to deliver its biggest results in the last few years.

You may have read that the 10 years split into three stages of 3 years and 4 months, for the Moon's house, sign and aspects in turn. That scheme doesn't appear in BPHS or Phaladeepika, so I'd use the degree rule instead.
Each sub-period's length is 10 years × the planet's own Mahadasha years ÷ 120. For Rahu, that's 10 × 18 ÷ 120 = 1.5 years.
| Order | Antardasha | Length | Ends after |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Moon-Moon | 10 months | 10 months |
| 2 | Moon-Mars | 7 months | 1 year 5 months |
| 3 | Moon-Rahu | 1 year 6 months | 2 years 11 months |
| 4 | Moon-Jupiter | 1 year 4 months | 4 years 3 months |
| 5 | Moon-Saturn | 1 year 7 months | 5 years 10 months |
| 6 | Moon-Mercury | 1 year 5 months | 7 years 3 months |
| 7 | Moon-Ketu | 7 months | 7 years 10 months |
| 8 | Moon-Venus | 1 year 8 months | 9 years 6 months |
| 9 | Moon-Sun | 6 months | 10 years |
These use nominal 12-month dasha years. If you were born inside a Moon Mahadasha, your sequence starts partway down this table.
A Real Example, Sub-Period by Sub-Period
A reader with a Pisces ascendant and the Moon in the 6th house (Leo) shared how their sub-periods went:
- Moon-Moon: settled into a new job abroad, but with tension, anxiety, trouble from rivals and a Covid lockdown.
- Moon-Mars: their family moved abroad to join them, they travelled to several countries, and a left-knee injury from overstraining took most of the period to heal.
- Moon-Rahu: a leadership position at work, with headaches and minor health issues.
- Moon-Jupiter: a big rise in net worth, a firmer position at work and a promotion.
- Moon-Saturn: mental tension, health problems, constant slogging at work and no peace.
For a Pisces ascendant, the Moon rules the 5th, a good house, but sits in the 6th of rivals and workload. That fits the anxiety and enemies of the opening sub-period.
Mars sits in their 10th, a Kendra, so the favourable Mars verses in BPHS apply. The overstrained knee is the Mars side of the same months.
Jupiter sits in their 2nd house of savings, which is also the 9th from the Moon, a Trikona. That's the good pattern BPHS keeps returning to, and the jump in net worth fits.
Saturn also sits in the 10th, but it rules their 11th and 12th and sits in the 5th from the Moon. For that position, BPHS describes gains at some times and quarrels at others, which matches the slogging and lack of peace they described.
Moon-Moon (10 Months)
BPHS links this opening sub-period to comforts, devotion and recognition. That needs a Moon that's exalted, in its own sign, in a Kendra or Trikona, or joined with the 9th or 10th lord.
For a debilitated Moon, one with malefics, or one in the 6th, 8th or 12th, the text lists loss of money or position, lethargy and worry about the mother.
Use these months to fix your sleep, settle living arrangements and set a family budget.
Moon-Mars (7 Months)
With Mars in a Kendra or Trikona from the ascendant, BPHS promises success, recognition, gains in land and a better home. Mars in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or under malefic influence, brings disputes, losses and a hot temper.
Phaladeepika (21.13) reads it harshly. But its translator S.P. Bhagat makes an exception for Cancer and Leo ascendants, where Mars is the yogakaraka (ruling both a Kendra and a Trikona). There, a well-placed Mars makes this sub-period excellent.
Put the drive into exercise or a renovation, and settle arguments early.
Moon-Rahu (1 Year 6 Months)
BPHS is mixed here. Rahu brings success and gains when it sits in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th, gets a benefic aspect, or joins a yogakaraka.
Rahu in a Kendra or Trikona can start well and turn harder later. A weak Rahu in the 8th or 12th from the Moon brings loss of position and mental strain.
Check Rahu's sign lord before you judge, read every contract twice and go slow on speculation.
Moon-Jupiter (1 Year 4 Months)
Jupiter in a Kendra or Trikona, or in its own or exalted sign, gives celebrations at home, wealth, land and success, per BPHS.
A combust or debilitated Jupiter, one joined by malefics, or one in the 6th, 8th or 12th house brings quarrels and losses. A weak Jupiter in the 6th, 8th or 12th counted from the Moon adds poor food and journeys away from home. Being a natural benefic doesn't make Jupiter's sub-period good on its own.
Study, find a mentor, and check that big commitments are affordable.
Moon-Saturn (1 Year 7 Months)
This sub-period has the worst reputation, mostly because Phaladeepika (21.16) lists illness and worry for loved ones.
BPHS gives the other side. Saturn in a Kendra or Trikona from the ascendant, in its own or exalted sign, with benefics, or strong in the 11th brings wealth, business growth, property and recognition. In the 2nd, 6th, 8th or 12th, or debilitated, it brings trouble from others.
Expect more work either way, so protect your rest and ask for help early.
Moon-Mercury (1 Year 5 Months)
BPHS ties a strong Mercury in a Kendra or Trikona, or in its own or exalted sign, to wealth, learning, trade profits and good company. Mercury in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Moon, or debilitated, brings losses and family stress.
One detail matters: the Moon treats Mercury as a friend, but Mercury treats the Moon as an enemy. Put agreements in writing and double-check the details.
Moon-Ketu (7 Months)
A strong Ketu in a Kendra, a Trikona or the 3rd brings gains, family welfare and religious interest, says BPHS, after a small loss at the start. Ketu in the 8th or 12th from the Moon, or with malefics, brings obstacles and quarrels.
Simplify where you need to, but don't quit a job or cut ties in a moment of frustration.
Moon-Venus (1 Year 8 Months)
In a Kendra, a Trikona or the 11th, or in its own or exalted sign, Venus brings a new house, vehicles, comforts and family happiness. Debilitated, combust or afflicted, it brings losses of property and trouble at home. In the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Moon, BPHS adds sorrow and unwanted moves far from home.
It isn't only a romance period, since home, money and creative work count too. Enjoy the gains without overspending.
Moon-Sun (6 Months)
The decade closes with the Sun. A Sun that's exalted, in its own sign, or in a Kendra, the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th or 11th brings back lost position or wealth and help from influential people. A Sun in the 8th or 12th from the Moon brings friction with authorities.
Use these months to finish long projects before Mars takes over.
If your Moon Mahadasha has been hard, I'm sorry. When the planet of the mind runs your life for 10 years, a difficult Moon shows up first in sleep, appetite and mood. That's exhausting to live with.

Someone with a Leo ascendant described losing a lot and continuing to lose: no steady work, gut issues and diabetes, and long isolation. Their anxiety and sadness didn't lift, even as they turned more spiritual.
Their Moon rules the 12th, a Dusthana, and forms an Amavasya yoga, meaning it was born close to the Sun with almost no light. Those are two of the conditions BPHS warns about.
Even then, the 10 years aren't one block. Each sub-period lasts 6 to 20 months, and the next lord can change the tone.
Find the date your current sub-period ends and check where the next planet sits in your chart. Meanwhile, keep the basics steady: sleep at the same time, eat proper meals, and talk to one person you trust regularly.
Start with the free remedies. One you keep up for months does more than a single big ritual.
- Fixed sleep and meal times. Food and sleep are Moon significations, and they're usually the first things to slip in this dasha.
- Time with your mother or the people who raised you, where that relationship is safe. Share the caring work instead of carrying it alone.
- The Chandra beej mantra: Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah, 108 times on Mondays.
- Giving food, milk or rice to people who need it. BPHS prescribes donating a cow or a she-buffalo for a difficult Moon-Moon sub-period. Feeding people, or supporting a well-run animal shelter, keeps the spirit of that without the problems of gifting an animal.
- The recitation BPHS names for a difficult sub-period: the Mahamrityunjaya mantra for Saturn and Ketu, the Vishnu Sahasranama for Mercury, the Shiva Sahasranama for Jupiter, Rudra japa for Venus and worship of Shiva for the Sun. Each applies to specific conditions, not to everyone.
- A pearl, last. I wouldn't wear a pearl just because you're in Moon Mahadasha. It strengthens the Moon, and if the Moon rules a difficult house for your ascendant, it can strengthen that house's problems too. Get your full chart checked first.

None of these replace a doctor. If your sleep, appetite or digestion has been off for weeks, get it checked. For more options, including Monday observances and daily habits, see my guide to Moon remedies.
Mars Mahadasha follows, for 7 years. The shift can feel sharp, because the Moon's decade runs on feeling and comfort while Mars runs on action and effort.

One person, now near the end of their Mars Mahadasha, looked back at their Moon years as the time they were endlessly caring.
They helped classmates with school projects, taught anyone who asked and spent their ₹20 of pocket money on friends. They forgave people for almost anything, so much that some thought they were faking it. Today, they said, they don't recognise that version of themselves.
That's why the final Moon-Sun sub-period is a good time to close what's open and plan the next seven years. The change usually unfolds over a few months rather than on the transition date itself.
Moon Mahadasha gives 10 years to the Moon's topics (mind, home, mother, food and the public) and to the houses the Moon rules and occupies in your chart. To judge yours, check the house it rules, the house it sits in, its sign and how bright it was at birth. Then read each sub-period lord on its own.
Remember, a Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th tells you where the decade will ask more of you, not that all 10 years will be bad. Parashara wrote that a strong Moon there gives good times between the hard ones.
If you're in a heavy stretch right now, I hope this helps you find which sub-period you're in and when it ends.
Share your ascendant, your Moon's house and your current sub-period in the comments, and I'll tell you what I'd watch for.
