What is the Darakaraka?
- The lowest degree: Mars at 3°02′ Cancer, the Darakaraka
The Darakaraka is the planet that stands for your spouse in Jaimini astrology. Dara means wife or spouse and karaka means significator, so the name says what it does.
Jaimini gives each of the seven planets a role, called a chara karaka, or movable significator. The roles go by how far each planet has travelled through its sign at the moment of birth. The planet with the highest degree becomes the Atmakaraka, the significator of the self, and the planet with the lowest degree becomes the Darakaraka.
Because the roles follow degrees and not fixed rules, any of the seven planets can be your Darakaraka. That makes it personal in a way Venus is not. Venus describes marriage in every chart, while your Darakaraka describes the partner in yours.
How the Darakaraka is Found
Four steps, using nothing but the degrees in your birth chart.
- The Darakaraka, Mars, in the 5th house
Take the seven planets
Use the planets from the Sun to Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are left out in the seven karaka scheme.
Read each planet's degree
Note how far each planet has travelled through its sign, from 0° to 30°. The sign itself does not matter here.
Rank them
Order the planets from the highest degree to the lowest. They take the seven roles in turn: Atmakaraka, Amatyakaraka, Bhratrikaraka, Matrikaraka, Putrakaraka, Gnatikaraka and Darakaraka.
Read the last one
The planet with the lowest degree is your Darakaraka. Then read its sign, its house and its Navamsha sign.
Example: New Delhi, 23 September 2026, 6:00 PM
The Moon stands at 27°56′ Capricorn, the highest degree, so it is the Atmakaraka. Mars stands at 3°02′ Cancer, the lowest, so Mars is the Darakaraka. It sits in the 5th house of a Pisces Ascendant chart and in Cancer in the Navamsha.
Seven karakas or eight
Some astrologers use an eight karaka scheme that adds Rahu. Rahu moves backwards, so its degree is counted from the end of its sign. This calculator uses the seven karaka scheme, so its answer matches the karakas in your Moon Dasha birth chart report.
The Darakaraka as Each Planet

Darakaraka, 7th House and Upapada Lagna
Jaimini astrologers read these three together. When they agree, the reading is strong. When they differ, each one is describing a different side of the same relationship.
- Darakaraka
- A planet, chosen by degree. It describes the person you marry: their temperament, their interests and the kind of work they may do.
- 7th House
- A house. It describes partnership itself: what you look for in a partner and how you behave in one. Find it with the 7th House Calculator.
- Upapada Lagna
- A sign, counted from the 12th house. It describes the marriage as others see it and how well it lasts. Find it with the Upapada Lagna Calculator.
What the Darakaraka Shows
- Your Partner's Nature
- The planet itself sets the tone: a Saturn partner and a Mercury partner are very different people to live with.
- The Navamsha Sign
- The sign your Darakaraka falls in within the Navamsha, the D9 chart, adds detail about your partner's temperament and the feel of the marriage.
- Where You Meet
- The house your Darakaraka occupies points to the part of life where you are likely to meet, and where the relationship plays out.
- When It Happens
- Periods of the Darakaraka, or of planets linked to it, often line up with meeting someone, an engagement or a wedding.
- Self and Spouse
- Astrologers compare the Atmakaraka, the planet of the self, with the Darakaraka. A friendly link between the two is read as an easy fit.
- Other Partnerships
- The Darakaraka describes close partners in general, so it can also say something about the people you go into business with.
