Planetary Strength Report

Shadbala Calculator(Six-Fold Planetary Strength)

Measure the six sources of strength behind the seven classical planets, compare every planet against its own required minimum, and read the full breakdown in Rupas and Virupas.

Understanding Shadbala

What is Shadbala?

Shadbala means "six-fold strength". It is the classical method for measuring how much power a planet actually has in a birth chart, set out in detail by Parashara in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and by Varahamihira in the Brihat Jataka.

Instead of judging a planet by one factor, the system takes six independent measurements: strength from its position, from the direction it occupies, from the time of birth, from its motion, from its own nature, and from the aspects it receives. The six are added into a single total, so two planets in the same sign can end up with very different scores.

Why the total is compared, not the raw number: each planet has its own pass mark. Mercury is expected to reach 7 Rupas, Saturn only 5. The percentage column on this page divides what a planet scored by what it was required to score, which is the only fair way to line all seven up beside each other.

Shadbala answers one question well: can this planet deliver? It does not say whether the delivery will be pleasant. That comes from house rulership, placement, dignity and the dasha running at the time.

The Six Sources of Strength

Every row in your breakdown table belongs to one of these six measurements. The total tells you how much force a planet has, and the source tells you where that force comes from.

Sthana Bala

Positional strength

Measures how much support a planet receives from its zodiac position and divisional placements. Exaltation, own sign, mooltrikona and related positional factors contribute here.

What raises it: Exaltation, own sign and mooltrikona placement, a good position across the seven divisional charts, and a seat in a kendra.

Dig Bala

Directional strength

Measures whether a planet occupies the part of the chart where its direction is strongest. Each classical planet has a preferred direction expressed through specific houses.

What raises it: The 1st house for Mercury and Jupiter, the 4th for Moon and Venus, the 7th for Saturn, and the 10th for Sun and Mars.

Kala Bala

Temporal strength

Measures support from time-based conditions around the birth. Day or night, weekday, lunar phase and other calendar factors contribute to this group.

What raises it: A birth in the half of the day or night that suits the planet, a favourable tithi, and rulership of the year, month, weekday or hora of birth.

Cheshta Bala

Motional strength

Measures strength connected with a planet's apparent motion. Speed and retrograde behavior affect how much Cheshta Bala a planet receives.

What raises it: Retrograde motion and the slow stations around it. This is why a retrograde planet often scores higher here than a fast direct one.

Naisargika Bala

Natural strength

Assigns each classical planet an inherent strength. This part is fixed by the traditional planetary order rather than changing from one birth chart to another.

What raises it: Nothing in your chart. The order runs Sun, Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn, and it is identical in every horoscope ever cast.

Drig Bala

Aspectual strength

Measures the net support or pressure a planet receives through planetary aspects. Helpful and difficult influences can raise or lower this part of the total.

What raises it: Aspects from benefics such as Jupiter and Venus. Aspects from malefics subtract, so this is the one component that can go negative.

Rupas, Virupas and the Required Minimum

Shadbala is reported in two units for the same quantity. One Rupa equals 60 Virupas, so a planet with 390 Virupas has 6.5 Rupas. The required minimum differs for each planet, which is what the percentage in your report is measured against.

PlanetRequired RupasRequired VirupasReads as 100% when
Sun5.00300Total reaches 300 Virupas
Moon6.00360Total reaches 360 Virupas
Mars5.00300Total reaches 300 Virupas
Mercury7.00420Total reaches 420 Virupas
Jupiter6.50390Total reaches 390 Virupas
Venus5.50330Total reaches 330 Virupas
Saturn5.00300Total reaches 300 Virupas

Reading the percentage

100% means the planet met its pass mark exactly. Above 150% the planet is unusually well supplied, and below 80% it is working with less than the tradition considers sufficient. Most charts contain a mix, and a chart where every planet clears its minimum is rare.

Ishta and Kashta Phala

These two figures sit beside the total in your report. Ishta Phala estimates the benefic result a planet is capable of producing, Kashta Phala the difficult one. Both are derived from exaltation strength and motional strength, so a planet can score high on the total and still carry a heavy Kashta figure.

What Strength Means for Each Planet

A number only becomes useful when you know what the planet is responsible for. Read your percentage for each planet beside the areas of life it carries.

Sun

Authority, vitality, the father, recognition and the spine of the chart.

Strong:
Steady health, a clear sense of direction, and the confidence to hold a position in public.
Weak:
Low stamina, hesitation about taking the lead, and results that depend more on others than on you.

Moon

Mind, emotional stability, the mother, comfort and daily wellbeing.

Strong:
An even temper, sound sleep, and the ability to recover quickly after a setback.
Weak:
Restlessness, mood swings, and decisions that get made from anxiety rather than from thought.

Mars

Drive, courage, physical energy, land, siblings and competition.

Strong:
Follow through, appetite for hard work, and the nerve to finish something difficult.
Weak:
Starting a lot and completing little, or energy that leaks into irritation instead of effort.

Mercury

Speech, analysis, commerce, learning and everything the hands and voice do.

Strong:
Fast comprehension, clean communication, and good instincts in anything that involves negotiation.
Weak:
Scattered thinking, poor recall under pressure, and avoidable errors in paperwork and numbers.

Jupiter

Wisdom, teachers, wealth, children, ethics and protection.

Strong:
Good counsel arriving at the right time, faith in the long view, and generosity that comes back.
Weak:
Missing guidance, shaky judgement about what is worth pursuing, and optimism without a plan.

Venus

Relationships, comfort, art, vehicles, taste and the pleasures of life.

Strong:
Warm relationships, a good eye, and an easy relationship with money spent on living well.
Weak:
Friction in partnerships, dissatisfaction with what you already have, and indulgence used as a fix.

Saturn

Discipline, work, longevity, structure, service and the results that take time.

Strong:
Endurance, respect earned slowly, and the patience to keep at something for years.
Weak:
Delays that feel personal, difficulty holding a routine, and a habit of quitting just before the payoff.

How to Read Your Shadbala Result

Work through the report in this order. Each step keeps the number connected to the chart it came from.

1

Start with percentage strength

The percentage compares a planet's calculated total with its own traditional minimum. A value of 100% means it has met that planet-specific benchmark.

2

Open the six-part breakdown

Two planets can reach similar totals for different reasons. The breakdown shows whether a result comes mainly from position, time, direction, motion, natural strength or aspects.

3

Read strength with chart context

Shadbala describes capacity, not whether every outcome will be pleasant. House ownership, placement, aspects, dignity and the active dasha still shape how a strong planet behaves.

Strength is not a verdict

Shadbala measures a planet's capacity to act. It does not decide on its own whether the planet is benefic or malefic, and it does not predict one fixed event. A strong 6th lord is a strong 6th lord. Nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice, and no planetary score should be used to delay care or a decision that needs a professional.

Mistakes to Avoid

These are the errors that turn a correct calculation into a wrong reading.

Treating the highest score as the best planet

Shadbala rates capacity, not intent. A strong planet that rules the 6th, 8th or 12th house has more force behind whatever it is designed to do, and that is not always comfortable.

Comparing raw Rupas across planets

Mercury needs 7 Rupas to pass and Saturn needs 5. Comparing the raw totals rewards Mercury for a requirement it has not met, which is why the percentage column exists.

Ignoring Cheshta Bala on a retrograde planet

Retrograde planets pick up a large share of motional strength. A high total that comes almost entirely from Cheshta Bala behaves differently from one built on position and direction.

Reading a single number without the breakdown

Two planets can land within a few Virupas of each other and be strong for completely different reasons. The six-part table is where the reading actually happens.

Using an approximate birth time

Dig Bala depends on the house a planet occupies, and Kala Bala depends on the hora and the part of the day. A rounded birth time moves both.

Skipping the rest of the chart

Strength says nothing about house rulership, yogas, aspects or the running dasha. A weak planet in a well-placed dasha can still deliver more than a strong one that never gets its turn.

Shadbala and the Other Strength Systems

Jyotish has several ways of measuring strength, and they answer different questions. Shadbala is the one that rates a planet on its own terms.

Shadbala

The six-fold total for the seven classical planets, expressed in Rupas against a required minimum.

Best used for: Judging which planets in the chart have the capacity to deliver their results at all.

Vimsopaka Bala

A score out of 20 based on a planet's dignity across a set of divisional charts.

Best used for: Checking whether a planet holds up across the vargas, not only in the birth chart.

Ashtakavarga

Benefic points contributed to each sign by each planet, collected in the Sarvashtakavarga total.

Best used for: Judging houses and signs, and for timing transits rather than rating a planet on its own.

Bhava Bala

The strength of the twelve houses, built partly from the Shadbala of the house lords.

Best used for: Seeing which areas of life are well supported once planetary strength is passed through to the houses.
