Rudraksha Wearing Guidelines
Complete guide to wearing and caring for your Rudraksha beads
What is Rudraksha?
Rudraksha are sacred seeds from the Rudraksha tree (Elaeocarpus ganitrus), traditionally used in Hinduism and Buddhism for meditation and spiritual practices. The word "Rudraksha" comes from "Rudra" (Lord Shiva) and "Aksha" (tears), meaning "tears of Shiva." Many people wear them as a sign of devotion to Shiva.
Unlike gemstones which strengthen planetary energies, Rudraksha beads work by absorbing negative energies and neutralizing malefic planetary effects. Practitioners often see them as gentler than gemstones, though it is still wise to check your chart before you choose one. Our Jupiter remedies and Mercury remedies guides cover the five-mukhi and four-mukhi beads.
Energizing Your Rudraksha
Before wearing Rudraksha for the first time, it must be energized:
- 1
Cleansing
Wash the Rudraksha with clean water or Ganga Jal (holy water). You can also use a mixture of water and raw milk.
- 2
Energizing with Mantras
Chant one of the following mantras 108 times while holding the Rudraksha:
- 3
When to Wear
The best time to wear Rudraksha is on a Monday morning during Brahma Muhurta (approximately 1.5 hours before sunrise) or after taking a bath. Face East or North direction while wearing it.
Shiva Panchakshari Mantra:
ॐ नमः शिवाय
Om Namah Shivaya
Rudraksha Beej Mantra:
ॐ ह्रीं नमः
Om Hreem Namah
Specific Mukhi Mantras:
Each Mukhi (face) of Rudraksha has its own specific mantra. Consult with a priest or expert for the appropriate mantra for your specific Rudraksha.

- Keep it in a clean, sacred place when not wearing
- Maintain sattvic lifestyle with meditation and prayer
- Remove it before sleeping if you find it uncomfortable
Don'ts - What to Avoid
- Don't wear Rudraksha during funerals or while visiting cremation grounds
- Avoid wearing it while consuming non-vegetarian food, alcohol, or intoxicants
- Don't share your Rudraksha with others - it's personal
- Avoid wearing during sexual activities (remove it beforehand)
- Don't use chemical soaps or perfumes directly on Rudraksha
- Avoid wearing it in places of impurity or negative environments
Understanding Tamasik Activities
Tamasik activities are those that involve impurity, negativity, or lower consciousness. While wearing Rudraksha, it's recommended to avoid these activities or remove the beads temporarily:
Physical Tamasik Activities:
- Consumption of non-vegetarian food
- Drinking alcohol or taking drugs
- Visiting slaughterhouses or burial grounds
- Engaging in violence or cruelty
Mental Tamasik Activities:
- Harboring negative emotions (hatred, jealousy)
- Speaking lies or harsh words
- Engaging in gossip or backbiting
- Stealing or cheating
If you cannot completely avoid these activities in your daily life, simply remove the Rudraksha temporarily before engaging in them. After completing the activity, purify yourself through bathing and prayers before wearing it again.
Caring for Your Rudraksha
Regular Cleaning
Clean your Rudraksha every 2-3 weeks by soaking it in water for a few hours, then gently scrubbing with a soft brush. Dry it in the shade, not in direct sunlight.
Conditioning
Once every few months, apply pure sandalwood oil, ghee, or sesame oil on the Rudraksha beads. This prevents them from drying and cracking, especially in dry climates.
Storage
When not wearing, keep your Rudraksha in a clean cloth pouch or in front of your altar. Avoid plastic bags or airtight containers as Rudraksha needs to breathe.
Re-energizing
Periodically (once every few months or on special occasions like Maha Shivaratri), re-energize your Rudraksha by chanting mantras and offering it at a Shiva temple.
Remember
Rudraksha is a sacred spiritual tool that works best when worn with faith, devotion, and a pure heart. The physical rules are important, but more crucial is maintaining inner purity through positive thoughts, compassionate actions, and spiritual practices. Respect your Rudraksha as a divine blessing from Lord Shiva, and it will protect and guide you throughout your life journey.
