About Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was a South African lawyer, liberation leader, political prisoner, and statesman who became a global symbol of resistance to apartheid. Born Rolihlahla Mandela in the Thembu royal family, he studied law and moved to Johannesburg, where racial segregation shaped every area of public life. He joined the African National Congress and helped create its Youth League, pressing the organization toward mass action. Mandela initially supported nonviolent resistance, but after escalating state violence and the banning of opposition movements, he helped establish an armed wing focused on sabotage. Arrested and convicted during the Rivonia Trial, he spent more than twenty-seven years in prison, much of that time on Robben Island. His imprisonment made him an international emblem of the anti-apartheid struggle. After his release in 1990, Mandela negotiated with President F. W. de Klerk while navigating political violence and deep distrust. Their efforts helped create South Africa's first fully representative election. As president, Mandela prioritized reconciliation, constitutional democracy, and peaceful transfer of power, though inequality remained severe. He served one term and then supported charitable, educational, and public health initiatives. His legacy combines moral courage with the difficult compromises required to move a divided country toward democracy.

Life Events

Mandela joined the African National Congress in 1944 and helped form its Youth League. As apartheid hardened after 1948, he became a leading organizer of the 1952 Defiance Campaign and worked with Oliver Tambo in one of South Africa's first Black law partnerships. He was arrested repeatedly, tried for treason, banned from political activity, and forced underground. After the Sharpeville massacre and the banning of the ANC, he helped establish Umkhonto we Sizwe. Captured in 1962, Mandela was later sentenced to life imprisonment at the Rivonia Trial. Prison conditions were harsh, yet he continued political study, maintained discipline among prisoners, and eventually began confidential talks with the government. He rejected conditional release offers that compromised collective freedom. Released in February 1990, he led negotiations toward democratic elections while urging restraint during deadly political conflict. Mandela and F. W. de Klerk shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. He voted for the first time in 1994 and became president. After stepping down in 1999, he supported peacebuilding, education, children's welfare, and HIV/AIDS awareness until declining health reduced his public work.
