Each date is a calendar day in Indian time from a daily sidereal ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsha): the first day Saturn is seen moving backward, and the first day it moves forward again. The sign is the one Saturn turns in; where it slips back into the previous sign, both are shown.

What a Saturn retrograde actually is

Saturn never reverses its orbit. About once a year Earth overtakes it on the inside, and for four and a half months Saturn appears to slide backward through the zodiac. In Jyotish this is Vakri Shani. The dates on this page mark the first day Saturn is seen moving backward and the first day it moves forward again.

Saturn is retrograde for more than a third of the time, so more than a third of people are born with it so, and nobody should treat it as a curse. Phaladeepika counts retrograde motion among a planet's strengths. The useful reading is intensified Saturn work: responsibilities come back for review, structures get tested, delays force a correction, and discipline has to become your own rather than imposed from outside.

Saturn's subjects are time, work, duty, structure, authority, debt and the consequences of what was done before. A retrograde sends them back for a second look. Unfinished work returns, a career structure is rebuilt, an obligation comes due, a schedule that could not last gives way. Saturn's constructive side is durability, and the retrograde shows what is not durable enough. Which part of your life it lands in depends on the house it falls in from your ascendant, which the section below works out.

Saturn through all twelve houses of the birth chart, with its signs, dignities and what it rules for each ascendant: Saturn in the Houses.

What to do, and what to leave alone

A Saturn retrograde is not punishment. Classical gochara judges Saturn from the natal Moon and finds it favourable in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from there, retrograde or not. What the period asks for is repair rather than expansion, and patience with results that cannot be rushed.

Do

  • Finish the piece of work you keep putting back in the drawer.
  • Pay down a debt, or write the repayment plan you have been avoiding.
  • Repair the physical thing before it fails: the roof, the vehicle, the knee.
  • Put a boundary in writing where you have been enforcing it by resentment.
  • Keep the schedule you can sustain for four months, not the one you can keep for four days.

Avoid

  • Reading a delay as a verdict. Saturn's results arrive late and stay.
  • Taking the shortcut that skips the step everyone else had to do.
  • Fighting an authority on principle when the real issue is your own structure.
  • Letting isolation pass for discipline.
  • Overwork with no recovery, which Saturn charges for later.

Saturn pays in full, and on its own schedule. The retrograde is where the account is reviewed.

Effect by ascendant

The sign Saturn retrogrades in is the same for everyone. The house it lands in is not. Pick a cycle, find your sidereal ascendant, and read the house Saturn is reviewing. Its full aspects on the third, seventh and tenth from there mean effort, partnership and career feel it too. Classical gochara judges Saturn from the natal Moon, favourable in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, so count from your Moon sign as well if you know it. When a cycle slips back into the previous sign, the review moves to the house before it part way through.

  • Aries ascendant

    12th house

    Expenses, endings and solitude

Old losses, unfinished duties, foreign matters and hidden fears return for closure. Supports disciplined retreat, austerity and work behind the scenes. Hard when isolation, expense or futile labour grows. If Saturn is also twelfth from your natal Moon, this is the first phase of Sade Sati.

  • Taurus ascendant

    11th house

    Durable gains and serious networks

One of Saturn's best classical positions from the Moon. Long-term gains crystallise through mature networks and patient effort, and old clients, organisations or goals revive. Watch a narrowing social life and treating people as useful.

  • Gemini ascendant

    10th house

    Career, authority and duty

The most visible placement. Career structures, titles, bosses and responsibilities come under review, and weak systems get exposed. Saturn can build real authority here if supported; the classical Moon transit warns of professional strain where conduct is poor.

  • Cancer ascendant

    9th house

    Belief, teachers and law

Belief, teachers, institutions and long-term direction are tested for durability. Doctrine, education and legal or ethical commitments get reconsidered. Strong for disciplined scholarship; watch faith turning to pessimism and conflict with authority.

  • Leo ascendant

    8th house

    Longevity, joint resources and crisis

Heavy but potentially powerful: endurance, research, and facing what cannot be controlled. Tax, inheritance, intimacy and old psychological matters reopen. Watch chronic fear, secrecy and financial rigidity.

  • Virgo ascendant

    7th house

    Marriage, contracts and business

Commitment is tested for durability. Old relationship obligations or business contracts return. A mature partnership deepens through responsibility; a bond held together by fear or duty shows it. The classical Moon transit is hard.

  • Libra ascendant

    6th house

    Work, debts, disputes and health

One of Saturn's strongest classical positions from the Moon, because effort defeats obstacles here. Excellent for repaying debt, routine, service, persistence in a dispute and disciplined health care. Old problems reopen so they can finally be put in order.

  • Scorpio ascendant

    5th house

    Study, children, romance and creativity

Seriousness and delay around education, children, romance and creative work. Abandoned studies or projects come back. Good for mastery through repetition; watch fear of risk, control of children and blocked expression.

  • Sagittarius ascendant

    4th house

    Home, property and emotional ground

Old domestic duties, property repairs, family burdens and the emotional foundation need attention. A more stable home can be built through work. The classical Moon transit is hard; watch heaviness, isolation and duty crowding out peace.

  • Capricorn ascendant

    3rd house

    Effort, skills and siblings

One of Saturn's favourable positions from the Moon classically. Excellent for disciplined effort, technical skill, writing, persistence and hard-earned courage. The retrograde brings back unfinished skills and projects; watch a strained sibling bond and fear of starting.

  • Aquarius ascendant

    2nd house

    Savings, family duty and speech

Finances and family responsibilities get restructured. Accumulation is slow but lasts if disciplined, and an old debt or family obligation may come back. Watch harsh speech, scarcity thinking and hoarding out of fear.

  • Pisces ascendant

    1st house

    Identity, health and self-direction

Serious self-definition. Responsibilities feel personal and cannot be delegated. Good for endurance and maturity; watch pessimism, physical depletion, isolation and an identity built entirely around duty.

Remedies that hold up

Do not reach for a Saturn remedy only because Saturn is retrograde; over a third of all charts have it so. Ask first whether Saturn in your chart needs support: its sign, the houses it rules for your ascendant, whether its dasha or your Sade Sati is running. Saturn in Aries needs patience taught by practice more than a ritual.

The habit that works for everyone is to finish what you started before starting anything else. List the unfinished obligations, oldest first, and close one a week. Pay the small debts in full rather than the big one in part. Keep one schedule you can hold for the whole retrograde, with rest written into it. Do the dull step properly; Saturn checks the work, not the intention.

Traditional measures exist too: service to the old, the poor and those who work with their hands, Saturdays kept simple, sesame or mustard oil offered, the Shani mantra, and above all no bad karma when nobody is watching. Blue sapphire is worn only after a chart reading, never because of a date. Nothing here replaces a doctor for a chronic condition or an accountant for a debt.
