Mercury retrograde dates in 2026

1950 to 2100

Each date is a calendar day in Indian time from a daily sidereal ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsha): the first day Mercury is seen moving backward, and the first day it moves forward again. The sign is the one Mercury turns in; where it slips back into the previous sign, both are shown.

What a Mercury retrograde actually is

Mercury never reverses its orbit. Three or four times a year, Earth overtakes it on the inside of the Sun, and for about three weeks Mercury appears to slide backward through the zodiac. In Jyotish this is Vakri Budh. The dates on this page mark the first day Mercury is seen moving backward and the first day it moves forward again.

The cycle has a shape. Mercury slows, turns, retraces a few degrees, passes between Earth and the Sun, slows again, turns, and crosses the same stretch a third time. The two turns are the stations, and near them Mercury hardly moves at all. Astrologers treat those days as the point where a decision or a document refuses to budge until a missing piece turns up.

Mercury's subjects are speech, writing, paperwork, calculation, short journeys and trade. Retrograde does not switch them off. It sends them back for a second look: a message is re-read, a plan is re-costed, an old contact reappears. Whether a cycle matters to you depends on the house it falls in from your ascendant, which the section below works out for each cycle.

The complete guide covers the natal placement, every house and conjunction, combustion and career in full: Mercury Retrograde in Vedic Astrology.

What to do, and what to leave alone

A retrograde is a three-week request for better process, not a reason to stop living. Most of the trouble people report comes from skipping a check they would normally make, then blaming the sky for it.

Do

  • Re-read anything before you send it, especially amounts, dates, names and attachments.
  • Back up data before a technical change, and keep a way to roll it back.
  • Read a contract line by line instead of skimming it.
  • Return to a draft, a course or a conversation you left unfinished.
  • Expect a few changed meeting times and build in a buffer.

Avoid

  • Postponing urgent care, legal action or a real deadline because of the date.
  • Assuming every ex who texts is destined to return.
  • Signing something unread because nothing can be controlled anyway.
  • Making a large technical change with no backup.
  • Endlessly revising work that is already ready.

The last one matters most. Mercury's medicine is revision, and its excess is permanent draft mode.

Effect by ascendant

The sign Mercury retrogrades in is the same for everyone. The house it lands in is not. Pick a cycle, find your sidereal ascendant, and read the house Mercury is reviewing. If you know your Moon sign, count from it as well: the ascendant shows what happens, the Moon shows how it feels. When a cycle slips back into the previous sign, the review moves to the house before it part way through.

  • Aries ascendant

    7th house

    Partnerships, contracts and clients

Partnerships ask to be renegotiated. An ex, a former client or a past business associate gets in touch. Listen for the need beneath a complaint, review contracts line by line, and do not mistake renewed contact for renewed commitment.

  • Taurus ascendant

    6th house

    Work, routines, disputes and debt

Office procedures, schedules, records, debts, conflicts and daily habits need correction. An old coworker or an unresolved administrative issue reappears. Double-check instructions and health records, and see the right professional when something is actually wrong.

  • Gemini ascendant

    5th house

    Romance, creativity, study and children

An old romantic contact may return. Creative blocks turn out to be planning problems. Students benefit from revision and dislike surprise tests. Rework the manuscript, the lesson plan or the dating pattern instead of forcing a result.

  • Cancer ascendant

    4th house

    Home, property, vehicles and education

Home repairs, vehicles, property documents, relocation plans and education decisions resurface, and working from home exposes weak routines. Inspect documents and maintenance issues. Give family conversations more time than logistics.

  • Leo ascendant

    3rd house

Messages, skills, siblings and short trips

Repeated messages, changed meeting details, short-trip complications, and a sibling or old school friend who reappears. Check recipients, links, attachments and tickets. It is a strong period for editing and for picking up a skill you set down.

  • Virgo ascendant

    2nd house

    Money, speech and family

Budgets, payments, savings and verbal promises need a second look. An old income source may return, or a forgotten expense may surface. Speak carefully at home, since one badly framed sentence can reopen a long family issue, and verify every amount.

  • Libra ascendant

    1st house

    Identity and decisions

You start questioning your direction, your appearance or how you have been showing up. Old plans and earlier versions of yourself come back for comparison. Review how you communicate and how fast you react, and do not make an identity decision just to escape a few weeks of uncertainty.

  • Scorpio ascendant

    12th house

Expenses, sleep, solitude and foreign matters

Hidden costs, subscriptions, international documents, private messages and sleep all ask for attention, and old thoughts get loud at night. Review expenses, passwords and privacy settings. Journal before reaching out on impulse, and treat prolonged isolation as something to get help with.

  • Sagittarius ascendant

    11th house

    Gains, friends and networks

Old friends, communities, customers and professional networks reconnect, and income projections need recalculating. Group messages lose context easily. Reconnect selectively: an old network is only useful if it still matches your values.

  • Capricorn ascendant

    10th house

    Career, reputation and authority

Professional messaging, interviews, promotions, reporting lines and unfinished work come under review, and a former employer or project reappears. Update your resume, audit what you have delivered, and avoid careless public replies. Recognition comes from fixing what others missed.

  • Aquarius ascendant

    9th house

Higher study, belief, law and long travel

University plans, publishing, legal paperwork, visas, long journeys and beliefs come up for reconsideration, and a former teacher or an abandoned course can return. Verify travel documents and citations. Question a belief honestly without turning doubt into cynicism.

  • Pisces ascendant

    8th house

    Joint money, secrets and research

Taxes, insurance, inheritance, shared accounts, confidential information and intimacy all need deeper review, and a hidden fact can change the story. Protect private data and ask direct questions before assuming betrayal. Good for research and therapy, bad for suspicion.

Remedies that hold up

Do not reach for a remedy only because Mercury is retrograde. Most of the time the planet needs a habit, not a ritual, and the first question is whether Mercury in your chart needs support at all.

The one that works for everyone is a second pass. Re-check messages, forms, sums, addresses and tickets before they leave your hands. Keep one notebook or app for tasks and promises, so a busy mind does not scatter them across ten places. Speak plainly and correct a mistake quickly instead of managing it. Set a stopping point for revision: Mercury grows through editing and suffers through endless editing.

Traditional measures exist too, from Budh mantras on Wednesdays to feeding green gram or helping someone learn to read. Mercury's gemstone, the emerald, is worn only after a chart reading, never because of a date. Nothing here replaces a doctor, a lawyer or a backup.
