Mars Retrograde in 2026
The Mars retrograde of the year, with the day it starts and ends, the sidereal sign it happens in, and the shadow period around it. Mars turns retrograde about every two years and two months for around two to three months, so some calendar years have none and a cycle can run across the year's end. Dates follow the Lahiri ayanamsha and Indian time.

Mars retrograde dates in 2026
1950 to 2100
Each date is a calendar day in Indian time from a daily sidereal ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsha): the first day Mars is seen moving backward, and the first day it moves forward again. The sign is the one Mars turns in; where it slips back into the previous sign, both are shown.
Mars is not retrograde at any point in 2026. It turns retrograde about every two years and two months, so some calendar years have no cycle at all; step to the year before or after.
What a Mars retrograde actually is
Mars never reverses its orbit. About every two years and two months Earth, on its faster inner orbit, overtakes Mars, and for two to three months Mars appears to slide backward through the zodiac. In Jyotish this is Vakri Mangal. The dates on this page mark the first day Mars is seen moving backward and the first day it moves forward again.
Of the five planets that retrograde, Mars does it least often, which is why a birth chart with retrograde Mars is less common than one with retrograde Jupiter or Saturn. Phaladeepika counts retrograde motion among a planet's strengths and says a retrograde planet can give results like its exaltation even in a difficult sign. Read that as insistence rather than reward: Mars's subjects get stronger and less direct, and whether that helps depends on the rest of the chart.
Mars's subjects are effort, courage, competition, anger, younger siblings, land and property, engineering and tools, surgery, and the body's heat and blood. A retrograde sends them back for a second look. A fight that was never finished comes back, a project that was pushed through gets reworked, a property matter reopens, energy that usually goes outward turns in and builds up. Which part of your life it lands in depends on the house it falls in from your ascendant, which the section below works out for the cycle.
Mars through all twelve houses of the birth chart, with its signs, dignities and what it rules for each ascendant: Mars in the Houses.
What to do, and what to leave alone
A Mars retrograde is not a ban on starting things, signing for property or having surgery. Jyotish looks at the house, the dasha and the muhurta, not the retrograde alone. For the day itself, the Tara Bala calculator shows whether the day's nakshatra supports your birth star. What the period does ask is that force be checked before it is used: finish what was started, repair what was done in haste, and let anger cool before it is acted on.
Do
- Finish the project, repair or dispute you pushed to one side. The period favours completing over launching.
- Keep up hard physical work: training, a long walk, work with your hands. Mars's energy still needs somewhere to go.
- Check the drawings, the measurements and the contract before building, buying or renovating.
- Repair a strained relationship with a brother, sister or colleague, starting with what you got wrong.
- Go slower on the road and with tools, and keep a doctor's dates for any treatment already planned.
Avoid
- Picking a fight to settle an old score. The grievance will feel fresh; the facts will not have changed.
- A rash start: a new venture, a new competition or a confrontation begun on impulse.
- Pushing the body past its limit to prove a point. Injuries from overreach are the classic complaint.
- Postponing a needed operation or treatment on the date alone. Check with your doctor, then the chart.
- Sitting on anger until it erupts. Say the smaller thing early rather than the larger thing late.
The medical point matters most. A retrograde is a reason to prepare carefully, never a reason to delay care you need.
Effect by ascendant
The sign Mars retrogrades in is the same for everyone. The house it lands in is not. Pick a cycle, find your sidereal ascendant, and read the house Mars is reviewing. Mars also throws full aspects on the fourth, seventh and eighth houses from there, so three more houses feel the review. Classical gochara judges Mars from the natal Moon and finds it easiest in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from there, so count from your Moon sign as well if you know it. When a cycle slips back into the previous sign, the review moves to the house before it part way through.
Remedies that hold up
Do not reach for a Mars remedy only because Mars is retrograde. First ask whether Mars in your chart needs support at all: its sign, the houses it rules for your ascendant, and whether its dasha is running. The Shadbala calculator measures how strong it is. A strong Mars in review needs discipline more than ritual, and retrograde Mars in a birth chart is a different matter from a transit and is read from the natal chart.
The habit that works for everyone is to put a pause between the impulse and the act. Count to ten before the sharp reply. Train the body every day so the heat has an outlet. Finish one difficult task a day instead of starting three. Mangal Dosha, which depends on where Mars sits in the birth chart, is not caused or cured by a retrograde; see the guide below for how it is read and when it cancels.
Traditional measures exist too: Tuesdays kept simple, the Hanuman Chalisa or a visit to a Hanuman temple, red lentils or jaggery given away, the Mangal mantra. Red coral is worn only after a chart reading, never because of a date. Nothing here replaces a doctor for a health matter or a lawyer for a property dispute.
