About Osho
Osho, born Chandra Mohan Jain and widely known earlier as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, was an Indian spiritual teacher whose provocative lectures and experimental meditation practices attracted an international movement. Raised in Madhya Pradesh, he studied philosophy and taught at the University of Jabalpur before leaving academic life to lecture across India. He criticized organized religion, nationalism, socialism, conventional family structures, and inherited moral authority. At the same time, he drew freely from Buddhism, Hindu traditions, Jainism, Taoism, Sufism, Western psychology, and modern philosophy. His approach placed individual awareness above doctrine and presented meditation as compatible with emotional expression, sexuality, humor, creativity, and material comfort. Dynamic Meditation, one of his best-known methods, combines rapid breathing, cathartic movement, silence, and celebration. A community established around him in Pune in 1974 drew many Western seekers and became a center for meditation and therapy groups. The movement's later relocation to Oregon produced Rajneeshpuram, a large commune marked by conflict with local residents, immigration disputes, and serious crimes committed by senior followers. Osho denied directing those crimes, but the episode permanently shaped his public reputation. After returning to Pune, he adopted the name Osho. His recorded talks were published in hundreds of volumes, and meditation centers inspired by his work continue worldwide, alongside continuing criticism of his leadership, wealth, and movement culture.
Life Events
Osho studied philosophy at the University of Sagar and became a lecturer, gaining attention in debates challenging religious and political orthodoxy. He resigned from university work in 1966 to travel and teach full time. In Bombay, he initiated disciples, developed Dynamic Meditation, and began building an international following. The movement relocated to Pune in 1974, where an ashram combined lectures, meditation, communal living, and Western therapy practices. Health concerns contributed to his move to the United States in 1981. Followers purchased an Oregon ranch and developed Rajneeshpuram, but disputes over land use and political control escalated. Senior commune members carried out crimes that included a 1984 salmonella attack and immigration fraud. Osho publicly broke with his former secretary Ma Anand Sheela and said he had not known about the crimes. Arrested in 1985, he entered an Alford plea to immigration charges, received a fine and suspended sentence, and left the United States. Several countries denied him entry. He returned to Pune in 1987, adopted the name Osho in 1989, and continued teaching despite declining health. He died in January 1990. His organization preserved an archive of talks and meditation methods, while debates about authority and accountability within the movement continued.
