About Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian artist, engineer, anatomist, designer, and natural philosopher whose curiosity came to embody the Renaissance ideal. Born near Vinci, he trained in Andrea del Verrocchio's Florentine workshop, where painting, sculpture, mechanics, and decorative arts were practiced together. Leonardo completed relatively few paintings, yet works such as The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa transformed portraiture, composition, gesture, and psychological expression. His subtle modeling of light and shadow gave faces and landscapes an atmospheric depth that later artists studied closely. The notebooks reveal an equally ambitious investigator. Leonardo drew muscles, bones, organs, water currents, plants, geological formations, weapons, bridges, flying machines, and theatrical devices. Many designs could not be built with the materials of his period, but they demonstrate a method based on observation, comparison, and repeated visual analysis. He moved among Florence, Milan, Rome, and France, working for rulers who valued both his artistic imagination and engineering skill. His projects were often unfinished, and his notes remained largely unpublished during his lifetime. Even so, the union of art and inquiry in his surviving work continues to shape how creativity, science, and invention are understood.
Life Events
Leonardo entered Verrocchio's workshop as a teenager and joined the painters' guild in Florence by 1472. His early commissions already showed a close study of nature and human expression. Around 1482 he moved to Milan and offered Duke Ludovico Sforza his services as an engineer, architect, and artist. During this period he developed court entertainments, studied anatomy, planned monuments, and painted The Last Supper. Political upheaval forced him to leave Milan in 1499. Back in Florence, he worked on the Mona Lisa and competed with Michelangelo on mural commissions for the Palazzo Vecchio. Leonardo later returned to Milan, continued anatomical dissection, and produced some of his most detailed scientific drawings. He spent several years in Rome but received fewer major commissions than younger rivals. In 1516 King Francis I invited him to France and provided a residence at Clos Lucé near Amboise. Leonardo brought notebooks and paintings, advised the court, and continued designing until declining health limited his work. He died there in 1519, leaving paintings and papers to trusted companions.
