How to Read the D7 Saptamsha Chart for Children

GuidesKashish Kumawat

Opened your D7 chart, found Saturn or Ketu sitting in its 5th house, and then read that it means no children? Then you're in the right place. One D7 placement can't promise or deny children on its own, and this guide shows you the order to read it in, from your birth chart's promise to the dasha that times it.

Saptamsha means the seventh part: sapta is seven, and amsha is a portion, as Sanjay Rath's notes on the principles of divisional charts (opens in a new tab) explain. You'll also see it spelled Saptamsa or Saptamamsa, and they're all the same chart. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) assigns "sons and grandsons" to it, which in plain terms means your children and grandchildren, whatever their gender.

People read this chart more anxiously than any other divisional chart, and I understand why. If you've been waiting longer than you hoped for a child, I'm sorry it's been a hard wait.

A chart can show which periods support children and where the obstacles sit, but it can't diagnose fertility, so read everything below alongside what your doctor tells you.

I follow V.P. Goel's Comprehensive Prediction through Divisional Charts here, as I did for the D10 Dashamsha chart. His method treats each divisional chart as a horoscope of its own, with a lagna, yogas and dashas.

Where his rules part ways with the classical texts or with P.V.R. Narasimha Rao's textbook, I'll say so.

We'll go through the seven-part calculation, the houses and which one shows which child, and a seven-step reading. Then come timing, the questions the D7 can't answer, and a sample chart with Saturn and Ketu in its D7 5th house.

Let's jump right in.

The D7 is the chart of children. It shows whether children come easily or after a wait, your relationship with each child, how they fare as seen from your own chart, and grandchildren.

If you're new to astrology, here's all you need to know: your birth chart (D1) has a 5th house of children, and the D7 zooms into that one house. The D1 tells you whether children are promised, and the D7 tells you how that promise unfolds and when.

And for those of you who want the details: the D7 covers everything the 5th house governs, so it also shows creativity, students and disciples, success with mantras, and poorva punya (the merit you carry from past lives). The houses keep their basic meanings inside it but apply them to children, so its 6th becomes your children's problems rather than your own. Some astrologers read love affairs from the D7 too, though I'd leave relationships to the D9 Navamsa chart.

Divide a sign's 30° by seven and you get parts of 4°17'08.57". A planet's D7 sign depends on which part it occupies, and on whether its sign is odd or even:

  • Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) count from the sign itself. The 1st part is that sign, the 2nd part the next sign, and so on.
  • Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces) count from the sign opposite, the 7th from it. The 1st part is that opposite sign, and the count moves forward from there.

Phaladeepika gives the same rule as BPHS. Moon Dasha's D7 chart calculator follows it too, so the chart you draw there matches mine.

Here's how two placements in my sample chart work out.

The lagna is at 23°27' Scorpio, in the 6th part (21°26' to 25°43'). Scorpio is even, so start from Taurus, the sign opposite: Taurus 1, Gemini 2, Cancer 3, Leo 4, Virgo 5, Libra 6. The D7 lagna is Libra.

The Sun is at 9°21' Leo, in the 3rd part (8°34' to 12°51'). Leo is odd, so start from Leo: Leo 1, Virgo 2, Libra 3. The Sun lands in Libra too, its sign of debilitation.

Leo and Scorpio split into seven parts each, with the Sun at 9°21' Leo and the lagna at 23°27' Scorpio both landing in Libra

Why Your Birth Time Matters So Much

Each part is a little over 4°, and the ascendant takes about 4 minutes to cross 1°. So the D7 lagna moves to the next sign roughly every 17 minutes, a bit faster in quick-rising signs and slower in the rest.

My sample chart keeps its Libra D7 lagna only for births between about 1:58 pm and 2:17 pm. Born about 10 minutes earlier or later, you'd have a different D7 lagna, and a different sign on its 5th house.

Planets move far more slowly. The Moon spends about 8 hours in one 4°17' part, and the others stay for days at the least. That's why your D7 planets are usually reliable even when your D7 lagna isn't.

The Seven Parts and Their Names

BPHS gives each of the seven parts a name, and every name is a liquid. Some books call them the D7's deities:

Odd sign partEven sign partNameLiquidWhat it describes
1st7thKsharaSalt waterA hard, difficult path
2nd6thKshiraMilkHappiness through worship
3rd5thDadhiCurdSteadiness in practice
4th4thGhrita (Ajya)GheePractice bearing fruit, calm
5th3rdIkshurasaSugarcane juiceEnjoying bliss
6th2ndMadyaWineBliss that keeps growing
7th1stShuddha jalaPure waterLasting bliss

The order runs backward in even signs. If those seven sound familiar, they're the same seven liquids as the seven oceans of Hindu cosmology, which the Devi Bhagavata Purana lists in its account of the oceans (opens in a new tab).

Seven brass bowls in a row holding salt, milk, curd, ghee, sugarcane juice, red wine and clear water

Goel reads them as stages of the soul, from salt water (life's harsh side) to pure water (lasting contentment). He checks the parts that hold the lagna, the lagna lord, the Sun and the Moon. Take the parts from the degrees in your birth chart.

I use this layer only as a shade on top of the house reading, never as a verdict on anyone's children.

1stThe promise of children, their wellbeing, the luck you carry from past lives
2ndHabits shaped by past lives, your children's wealth
3rdYour children's courage, the fruits of past karma
4thHappiness from your children, and theirs
5thThe first child, past-life merit, intelligence
6thChildren's problems and illnesses, the strain they put on your partner
7thThe second child, conception, children from a second marriage
8thObstacles and delays around children, the past karma behind them
9thThe third child, grandchildren, your children's fortune
10thYour children's actions, and the care they get from you
11thGains through children, the hopes you hold for them
12thThe cost of raising children

Two houses outweigh the rest. A strong D7 lagna assures the birth of children, and the 5th shows the first child and the merit you bring into this life.

Which House Shows Which Child

The 5th house shows your first child.

The 7th is the 3rd house from the 5th (the house of younger siblings, counted from the first child), so it shows the second child. The 9th, the 3rd from the 7th, shows the third, and the count carries on like that. To judge one child, read its house and that house's lord.

Traditions differ on the direction of the count:

ChildForward count (every D7 lagna)Reverse count (even-sign D7 lagna)
First5th house9th house
Second7th house7th house
Third9th house5th house

Goel counts forward for every D7 lagna. P.V.R. Narasimha Rao, in his free textbook Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach (opens in a new tab), counts backward when the D7 lagna is an even sign, which swaps the 5th and the 9th.

I use the forward count and look at the other only as a cross-check.

Keep your D1 open next to the D7. The steps begin with the birth chart and end with yogas, so each one builds on the last.

An infographic listing the seven steps for reading a D7 chart, the same steps as the headings below

Step 1: Confirm the Promise in Your Birth Chart

Three things in the D1 come first: the 5th house, the planet that rules its sign (the 5th lord), and Jupiter.

The D7 can sharpen what they promise. It can't create children the birth chart doesn't support.

BPHS starts with the good case. When the lagna lord and the 5th lord sit in their own signs, in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) or in a trikona (the 5th or 9th), children bring real happiness. The two lords together in a good house bring children early.

It also lists combinations for difficulty with children. A 5th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is one of them. Another needs Jupiter, the lagna lord and the 5th lord all to lack strength at once.

Weigh each one against the rest of the chart rather than reading it as a verdict.

Chandrashekhar Sharma adds an old aphorism on the other side: the Moon aspecting the 5th house gives at least one child.

A Redditor whose 5th lord sat in the 12th wrote that both their children, born about two years apart, came in their Saturn-Saturn period. The placement didn't stop them from becoming a parent, which is why I'd check where that 5th lord lands in the D7 before reading the D1 rule as final.

Step 2: Judge the D7 Lagna and Its Lord

Everything in the D7 rests on its lagna. The first rule for this chart is that a strong D7 lagna assures children.

In one of Goel's cases, a person with a weak D7 5th house but a strong D7 lagna still had a child, through adoption.

Three checks tell you how strong it is:

  1. Where its lord sits. The 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th houses are the best places for the D7 lagna lord, with the 2nd and 11th behind them. The 3rd, 6th and 12th weaken it, exaltation or not.
  2. What surrounds the lagna. Aspects on the lagna add strength, and so do benefics in the houses on both sides of it (shubha kartari). Malefics on both sides (papa kartari) hem it in.
  3. Rahu, Ketu or the D7's 8th lord in the lagna. When the rising sign is also a planet's mooltrikona sign (its favoured sign, such as Aries for Mars), they bring stress in matters of children.

A vargottama D7 lagna, one in the same sign in the D1 and the D7, gives very good results as long as its lord is well placed.

Step 3: Read the D7's 5th House and 5th Lord

This step tells you the most about your first child. A 5th house with benefics in it or aspecting it, and a 5th lord in a kendra or trikona, point to a child without much struggle.

Malefics change the picture. Saturn in the D7's 5th or aspecting it tends to delay, while Rahu and Ketu there tend to bring unusual circumstances or worry. The D7's 8th lord sitting in the 5th, or the 5th lord moving into the 6th, 8th or 12th with no benefic link, are the combinations that weigh the most.

Still, a malefic in the 5th isn't a verdict on its own.

One person on a Jyotish forum described a child who came later than usual, during the peak of their Sade Sati, despite Saturn in their 5th house. They didn't say which chart that 5th house was in. They also noted that their Venus and Jupiter were vargottama in both the D9 and the D7.

Step 4: Find Your Birth Chart's Lagna Lord and 5th Lord in the D7

Two D1 planets carry the birth chart's story into the D7, so look up their D7 houses next.

Your D1 lagna lord shows your own bond with your children. It shouldn't sit in the 6th, 8th or 12th of the D7. There, it tends to show a cool or strained relationship with your children, even when they arrive easily.

Your D1 5th lord shows how the promise carries into the D7. In a kendra, a trikona or the 11th of the D7, it confirms the birth chart's promise. In the 6th, 8th or 12th, it repeats whatever difficulty the D1 showed.

Step 5: Weigh Jupiter, the Karaka of Children

Jupiter is the natural significator (karaka) of children in every chart, so check it in the D1 and the D7. Well placed in a kendra or trikona of the D7, especially when it aspects the D7 lagna or 5th, it protects the whole chart's promise. You can check what Jupiter does in each D1 house in Jupiter in the 12 houses.

Don't confuse it with the putrakaraka of Jaimini astrology. That's the chara karaka with the fifth-highest degree among the seven planets, so it changes from chart to chart, and it's read mainly with Chara dasha.

There's one catch with Jupiter. In the D7 lagna itself, it isn't good for children, by the rule that a chart's significator shouldn't sit in that chart's lagna.

It's the same idea as Jupiter in the 5th house of the D1, a karaka in its own house, and benefic company softens it.

If Jupiter is weak in both charts, these Jupiter remedies are where I'd start. The Sun and Mercury are worth a glance too: the Sun for creative drive and Mercury for how you manage and talk to your children.

Step 6: Check the 6th, 8th and 12th for Delays

These three houses show where the obstacles sit. The 6th shows children's problems and illnesses, the 8th shows delays and the karma behind them, and the 12th shows the costs.

A planet in the D7's 6th, 8th or 12th has a hard time giving good results, and exaltation doesn't rescue it. One that's badly placed in the D1 and falls into the D7's 8th or 12th again rarely helps. Mars is the exception in the 6th and Mercury in the 8th: both do well there in any divisional chart.

Dignity comes next. A planet in its exaltation sign, its own sign, the same sign in both charts (vargottama) or its direction of strength (dig bala) is strong.

A debilitated planet needs its debilitation cancelled (neecha bhanga) before it can help.

Combustion, sitting too close to the Sun, spoils a planet's results even from a good house.

One more combination lives here. The D7's 9th lord linked to its 8th house or 8th lord points to children through adoption.

Step 7: Look for Yogas in the D7

Any yoga formed inside the D7 gives its results through children. A raja yoga (a combination for status, such as a kendra lord joining a trikona lord) points to children who do well in life, or to a sharp mind in you. A dhana yoga (the lords of the 2nd and 11th linked with the lords of the 1st, 5th or 9th) points to many children, or to children who prosper.

Its results run all through life, and they peak in the dashas of the planets that form it.

The D7 shows the promise of children and when that promise is most likely to open. Some of what people ask it, it can't answer.

The sex of a child. Moon Dasha never predicts it, and in India, determining a child's sex before birth is illegal under the PCPNDT Act.

The best-known classical rules, such as Brihat Jataka's, work from a chart cast for the moment of conception. Goel built a method of his own, and he writes that one person's Saptamsha can't show the sex or number of children, because the partner's chart plays a part. He withholds the method so that it isn't misused.

Ignore any page that reads it from odd and even signs in the D7.

An exact count. The old combinations go as high as ten sons, written for a very different time. The D7 shows capacity and timing; how many children you have is your decision.

A fertility diagnosis. A hard D7 can describe a delay, never its medical cause.

The D7 tells you what the chart can give, and the dashas tell you when.

Look up your current Mahadasha (the main period) and Antardasha (the sub-period inside it), then find both lords in the D7 and the D1. These are the periods when a child is most likely to be born:

  • A first child: the dasha of a planet in the D7's 5th, its 5th lord, a planet aspecting the 5th, the D7 lagna lord, Jupiter, or the D1's 5th lord.
  • A second child: the same with the D7's 7th house and its lord, and the 9th for a third.
  • Delays: periods of planets in the D7's 6th, 8th or 12th, or ruling them, with no link to its lagna or 5th.

For a happy event, look to the sub-periods of planets that are well placed and strong from the D7 lagna.

P.V.R. Narasimha Rao adds a finer layer, from a case where two children came in Rahu's Mahadasha. Rahu acted as the D7's 5th lord, and the pratyantardasha (the third level of the dasha) at both births belonged to Saturn, the strongest planet in that 5th house.

A Redditor with a Libra ascendant, for whom Saturn rules the 5th, wrote that their baby arrived in Ketu Mahadasha and Saturn Antardasha. Their Antardasha lord was the 5th lord, which is why I check the Antardasha lord as closely as the Mahadasha lord.

The D7 isn't tied to one dasha system.

K.N. Rao times births with Chara dasha read alongside the Saptamsha, and the D7 works with Yogini dasha too. For the Vimshottari periods themselves, see my guide to Vimshottari dasha.

I'd leave transits out of the D7 unless your birth time has been rectified. Some astrologers do read them in divisional charts, but a transit through a D7 house is counted from the D7 lagna, the most fragile point in the chart.

Here's the whole method on one chart: 26 August 1993, 2:07 pm IST, Ahmedabad. The planets come from the real sky that afternoon, but it's a sample, not a real person's chart, so you can enter it in the calculator and check every step.

The sample birth chart with Scorpio rising: Rahu in the 1st, the Moon in the 2nd, Saturn in the 4th, Ketu in the 7th, Venus in the 9th, the Sun and Mercury in the 10th, and Mars and Jupiter in the 11th

In the chart image, the small number in each house is its sign, from 1 for Aries to 12 for Pisces.

The Birth Chart's Promise

The D1 lagna is 23°27' Scorpio, with Rahu in it. The 5th house (Pisces) is empty. Its lord, Jupiter, sits in the 11th in Virgo with Mars, the lagna lord.

That's the good case from Step 1: the lagna lord and the 5th lord together in a good house.

Both lords aspect the 5th from the 11th, and in the D9 chart, Jupiter is exalted in Cancer.

The birth chart's promise is clear.

The D7 Lagna and the 5th House

Moon Dasha's D7 chart calculator listing the sample chart's D7 placements: the Sun debilitated in the 1st house, Venus, Saturn and Ketu in the 5th, and Jupiter and Mercury exalted

The D7 lagna is Libra. Its lord, Venus, sits in the 5th, a trikona, the best kind of house for it by Step 2.

The lagna itself holds the Sun, debilitated in Libra, and nothing aspects it. So the lagna is decent rather than strong, and its lord does the carrying.

Now Step 3, and the placement from the top of this guide. The D7's 5th house (Aquarius) holds Saturn and Ketu, the pair that scares people, along with Venus.

But Saturn is the 5th lord, in its own sign and vargottama. For a Libra lagna it's also the yogakaraka (the planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona, here the 4th and 5th).

The 5th lord and the lagna lord sitting together in the 5th is a strong signature for a first child.

Saturn adds a likely delay or a heavy sense of responsibility, and Ketu some worry or distance. Neither turns the promise into a denial.

The 7th house of the second child (Aries) is empty, and its lord Mars sits in the 9th, a trikona. The 9th holds Mars, and its lord Mercury is the weak spot I'll come to in Step 6.

The Lords, Jupiter and the Yogas

For Step 4, the D1 lagna lord Mars lands in the D7's 9th, a trikona. That's a warm bond with your children.

The D1 5th lord Jupiter lands in the D7's 10th, a kendra, exalted in Cancer.

For Step 5, Jupiter is exalted in a kendra of the D7, and exalted in the D9 as well. It doesn't aspect the D7 lagna or 5th (its aspects fall on Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces), so it protects through its own strength. It isn't in the lagna, so there's no karaka-in-its-own-house problem.

For Step 6, the D7's 6th and 8th are empty. The 12th holds Mercury, exalted in Virgo but combust in the D1, only 3° from the Sun, so by Step 6 it can't give good results. Mercury rules the D7's 9th, which makes the house of a third child the one with the weakest lord here.

The adoption combination doesn't form: Mercury has no link to the 8th house or to Venus, its lord.

Saturn and the Moon are both vargottama.

For Step 7, Venus (the lagna lord) and Saturn (the lord of the 4th and 5th) sit together in the 5th. That's a raja yoga in the house of the first child, pointing to children who do well.

When Children Are Likely

These are the windows I'd mark if this were your chart, from its Vimshottari periods (Lahiri ayanamsa):

  • Sun Mahadasha, November 2018 to November 2024: the Sun is debilitated in the D7 lagna, so this period leans on its sub-periods.
  • Sun-Jupiter, December 2020 to September 2021: the D1 5th lord, exalted in a D7 kendra.
  • Sun-Saturn, September 2021 to September 2022: the clearest window for a first child, with the D7's 5th lord in its own 5th house beside the lagna lord.
  • Sun-Venus, November 2023 to November 2024: the D7 lagna lord, sitting in the 5th.
  • Moon Mahadasha, November 2024 to November 2034: the Moon is vargottama and rules the D7's 10th. Moon-Mars (September 2025 to April 2026) brings in the 7th lord of a second child, and Moon-Saturn (February 2029 to September 2030) and Moon-Venus (September 2032 to May 2034) return to the 5th.

Notice the pattern from the timing section: a Mahadasha lord that's weak in the D7 can still hold strong sub-periods, and the sub-period lords do most of the work.

Is the D7 Chart the Same as the 7th House?

No, the D7 isn't the 7th house. The 7 in D7 is the number of parts each sign is divided into, so the D7 is the seventh divisional chart, read for children. The 7th house of your birth chart is about marriage and partners, and the D9 is the chart that zooms into it.

Which House in the D7 Shows the First Child?

The 5th house of the D7 shows the first child, the 7th shows the second and the 9th shows the third, each the 3rd house from the one before. Read each house together with its lord. P.V.R. Narasimha Rao counts backward for an even-sign D7 lagna, which swaps the 5th and the 9th.

Can the D7 Chart Deny Children?

A single D7 placement can't deny children. The D7 refines the birth chart's promise, and the classical combinations for difficulty with children are judged in the birth chart, weighed against everything else in it. A malefic in the D7's 5th is one factor among several, and a strong D7 lagna with a weak 5th can still show a child through adoption.

Can the D7 Tell Whether I'll Have a Boy or a Girl?

The D7 can't tell you whether you'll have a boy or a girl, and Moon Dasha never predicts a child's sex. Determining a child's sex before birth is illegal in India under the PCPNDT Act, and even astrologers who research the question say one person's D7 alone can't show it.

How Accurate Does My Birth Time Need to Be for the D7?

Your birth time needs to be accurate to within a few minutes for the D7 lagna. It changes sign roughly every 17 minutes, so a birth time rounded to the half hour can put you in the wrong D7 lagna. If your lagna sits near a part boundary, read the D7 through Jupiter and your D1 5th lord until the birth time is rectified.

The D7 refines the 5th house of your birth chart, so start there. Then judge the D7 lagna and its lord, the D7's 5th house and lord, where your D1 lagna lord and 5th lord land, and Jupiter.

The dashas of the planets that rule or occupy the 5th, 7th and 9th show when each child is most likely.

Remember, Saturn or Ketu in your D7's 5th is one factor among several, as the sample chart shows. Read the 5th lord, the lagna lord and Jupiter before you assume the worst.

If you're in the middle of a long wait, I hope this gives you a clearer picture of which periods support you, and please keep your doctor in the loop.

What does your own D7 5th house hold? Tell me its sign and the planets in it in the comments, and I'll share how I'd read them.
